I have purchased the maps for Italy for my Tom Tom.

I bought a new SD card to upload the map to. However, the TT won't connect to my PC with the blank SD card in. When the original SD card is in, it connects fine. When I replace the SD card, it loses the connection and so I can't add the Italian maps.

I am flying tomorrow so any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Where did you buy the maps?

If it was online from TomTom then you'd have downloaded them to your current SD card after you'd backed the system up. Or if you didn't have space on your current SD you'd copy the back-up to a new, larger SD card and then update that.

If you bought the software from elsewhere then you'll have to rely on that supplier's instructions.

Thanks for the response.

Purchased from Tom Tom.

When I plug in the TT, with the original SD card in, I am prompted to download the update. When I click to proceed, it says that there is not enough memory. When I remove the SD card and replace it with the new blank card, it loses the connection so I can't seem to add it to the new card.

Any ideas?

1) Backup your original card using TomTomHome.

2) Remove original SD card (store somewhere safe) and insert new SD card.

3) Restore the backup to your new SD card using TomTomHome.

4) Run TomTomHome to install your new maps.

That should be it, but I've not done it for quite a while as I just bought the whole European one instead of doing it country by country.

The problem is that the computer doesn't seem to recognize the TT when the blank SD card is in so I can't restore the backup to the new card.

I have backed up the data from the original card but I can't get it to connect with the new SD card.

Thanks again.

The easiest option would be to use TomTomHome to manage your original SD and remove the UK maps, and then install the Italy one. Keeping a copy of your orignal map somewhere of course.

This is not the best solution, but just a quick workaround so that you can get to Italy.

In theory, if you can access both SD cards directly from the computer (i.e. not inserted into the TT), then you should be able to replicate what you've got on one SD to the other, and then insert that in the TT and add the new map that way.

The original card is not big enough for the Italy maps unfortunately.

The only way I can connect the new SD card to the computer is when it is in the TT. For some reason though it doesn't recognize that there is a blank card in there. I have tried a couple of blank cards so the card doesn't seem the issue.

Going to struggle with my trip unless I can get this working!

Is there still not enough room if you remove the UK maps as the Italy one is only 70MB more?

The only other option I can think of at short notice would have been to buy the retail SD card version with the map already on.

BTW, which model is it, as they all come with different internal/externals memory sizes (http://uk.support.tomtom.com/cgi-bin/tomtom_uk.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2634&Lid=1)
