OP, not a stupid question as some suggest. Just ignore ignorance, it is it's own reward. But why complicate a simple operation? Unless you want to know exactly why and how? Just count in seconds until you pass a stationary object the car in front of you has passed; less than 2 you are too close, more than 2 it doesn't matter. Works at speeds of 40mph and above.
I am the OP and the reason I asked the original question was so that I could build a scale model.
Counting to two when your working with 2.5cm doesn't quite work.
