I'm going to the Crewe one in Feb next year. Already a member but need a check drive since moving to Cheshire a few years ago.Going to do the RoSPA too.
Some good advice on here. I did the IAM test at 19 years old. Well worth it for me. Good skills to have.
thoughts on AD:
- IAM and ROSPA both offer agreat introduction to AD
- within both organisations you can pursue AD beyond just the introductory level...
- both organisations by nature of the people they deal with and what they are trying to achieve will have a fairly rigid framework within which they encourage you to learn - sometimes that can mean a suggestion that there is a preferred way to do something (e.g. steering) and while that isn't always the full answer, it is usually a good starting point - so worth taking on board / learning / developing further later...
- both organisations will have members who are very much flat cap / driving gloves / pipe type of members - blinkered and narrow minded, but that is the same as any other organisation, and there are also many very enlightened and forward looking members - take them as they come / humour them / ignore the bigotted thinking and move on... there is huge value in the organisations, don't allow a few members to put you off!
- remember that for both organisations, their courses merely open the door to the realisation that there is life-long learning in driving - which while it can be daunting is also very exciting!

It's good to know that the advice is a starting point - similar to religion I guess (not that I'm religious), you listen and interpret for yourself. I'm keen to get out with experienced drivers and listen to what proper grown ups have to say, some of my friends are still at the boy racer stage and my Dad has a heavy right foot so I don't have the most objective bunch to ask for advice at the moment.
I suspect after IAM / AD I will get the itch and want to do more!

Do both tests, take what you like from both, and ultimately stay safe.
I took my second RoSPA test this afternoon, and got a "gold"....for me it was the hardest test I have done since passing my test some 31 years ago. On the debrief I thought I had blown it, It is hard listening to your short comings, it makes you a better driver if you take on board the feedback, and then apply it.

SVS...Thanks for the link, but that's bikes....and i gave up riding mine when daughter was born....and figured that my luck would run out eventually.
Is the "Masters" really for people in IAM who are heavily involved in "observing" etc....I have been in the IAM for some 11 years, but other than taking my test had nothing to do with then other than read the mag every 1/4!

You gave up bikes? Then there's no hope for you
Masters is unrelated to being an observer. It's a slightly higher level than Gold and, outside the police etc, probably as high a standard as you can get without spending HPC money. However, the cost of IAM Masters is roughly what you'd pay for an intro day with an HPC Gatekeeper ...

Quite the opposite, it's about driving. Check out the Masters page on the IAM website for the details. You are already au-fait with the IAM style, Masters expects you have perfected the techniques such that you can demonstrate an exemplary drive, with progress, with "sparkle" with an excellent commentary. When it all comes together it really is very worthwhile and satisfying. Do find a Masters Mentor in your area and arrange a tester run out - not everyone is good enough - they'll soon let you know if you have what it takes, enjoy. Is the "Masters" really for people in IAM who are heavily involved in "observing" etc....
