Fast acceleration from start with Automatic
Discussion
The DSG unit in my car can be set into S (presumably sport mode) by pulling the gear selector back once, which increases the rev limit before changes are made. Its not sports car fast but I honestly can't see many situations where I would need it to be accelerate from standstill any faster.
I believe most BMW auto boxes from about 2014 have launch control. Certainly the 330d and X530d I've recently driven do. Engage Sport+ mode, left foot firmly on the brake, gear selector to D and then pushed across to S, mash accelerator down and a message comes up on the dash saying Launch Control Active. Quickly release left foot from brake and holy st.
It was great fun in the 330d, but the X5 took off way faster than a car that size has any right to

I don't really get the majority of launch control systems. You pull up to some traffic lights and decide you want to launch yourself. By the time you've toggled through various menus to start the process and then pressed the brake whilst mashing the accelerator (thereby sounding like a tool) to get everything ready the lights have long turned green.
Yeah, neutral drops are one of the most mechanically unsympathetic things you can do with a car, not a great idea!
Yes, left foot braking while revving it up can work, but as mentioned, modern drive by wire throttle generally prevents this, it's a pain the arse when using normal left foot braking in a fwd car etc as well.
So you may well be limited to just mashing the pedal off the line.

S does not increase rev limit. Just delays changing up gears to higher revs on part throttle than when in D. In D if full throttle used still holds the gear until max revs. A least it did in my 2012 Octavia vRS and my current 2018 Leon. Magnum 475 said:
Only just saw this. Lad I knew about 30 years ago tried this in his Rover P6... totally f**ked the transmission - AA recovery required & new gearbox fitted.
To be fair, when I was at school my best mate's Dad had a p6b and it had 3 new gearboxes just tootling to the golf club and back... then he got an SD1 and things got worse.....Ron240 said:

When I was a trainee I used to get sent on errands in the boss’s Ford Scorpio company car (it was 1997), I did that several times but company cars are built as robustly as hire cars aren’t they.
So just to be clear and following the original post - you redlined it in Park then moved the lever through Reverse then Neutral before finally selecting Drive?Ron240 said:

No, put it in neutral, revved it, then into D. Black tram lines left on Westferry Road on the Isle of Dogs.
Yes this is what I thought, but was different to the posts you quoted saying you done the same thing, so just thought I would ask. The last time I tried this was in a Dodge Charger while on holiday in Florida, it was quite a loud result!
I thought most modern sports cars have a launch mode nowadays?
The Nissan Gtr is great at launching, there's no messing about, just have transmission and traction in R mode, left foot brake, full throttle and release brake, hit 60 in just under 3 secs.
Even better with a Litchfield remap (ecutek) as you can adjust launch boost rpm, build boost off the line, and you have a rolling launch feature. Passengers giggle like children
