Had countless journeys up the M6 where the gantries have been displaying nonsense. The usual one is where they just set them to 60 through Birmingham without any excuse. Sometimes you'll get them set to 40 on an empty motorway, or the favourite where they display 2 of the 3 lanes as closed, but then nothing happens and the majority of the traffic are sat queuing in single file trying to work out what's going on.

I'd say that as a minimum I see this happen once per journey. Some nights it can be 3 or 4 times as I traverse the M1 and M6 heading "up norf."

IMO they just make the roads more dangerous. I'm sure someone who works for highways England will along to tell us about all the lives they save.
On a speed awareness course I did a few years ago they claimed that there are sensors in the road on un smart sections that monitor air quality and noise

They claimed that reducing the speed limit just where they happen to have the yellow boxes on the gantry was to help bring down pollution levels and at night, when there's virtually no traffic, to help local residents sleep, and not to try and catch a few motorists out

Once I,got to the metal nsl signs I accelerated and probably got to 66 / 67 by the gantry and then flash. It was on the M3 Basingstoke if anyone knows it. Lane 1 is always coned off!! I don't know why they have the metal nsl signs & then a gantry 200m later. Thanks again.

Sounds about right.

Might work in theory, but the reality is that people just brake before cameras then speed up again which increases brake and tyre particulate matter in the surrounding area and adds to engine noise and air pollution with the acceleration back to speed.

Most of my driving is done in the evening and it's very common to see cars tapping their brakes at the sight of the yellow boxes, then speeding up again once they are past the white markers on the road.

Maybe they'll change tactic and start making all gantries average speed zones in future.
