Actually, it's Denis I've had to warn Jim Spriggs about that before...
Most people just call me "Major", though.
Ah yes, right you are then Major Denis.
BTW, seen anything of Henry C and Minnie B recently? I used to like those two.
Best wishes all,
Dave.
The delightful Miss Bannister and that utter cad, Henry Crun, were last seen running a Christmas pudding breeding farm near the Dartmoor custard mines.
( Sorry for the threadjack - I'll stop now.)
Going back to the start of this thread, I suggest that IAM drivers should rarely be holding up other drivers. To me, that seems like poorly fitting in with general traffic flow, which can cause its own safety issues. If that's what your particular IAM Observer or Group advises, then I'd highly recommend investing in some professional coaching from someone like StressedDave here or RideDrive.co.uk
No you don't. However, you do have to complete formal "observer" training and pass a "qualified observer" test. The IAM and RoSPA's standards are monitored by the DSA. Thus, IAM and RoSPA observers should be sufficiently qualified and knowledgeable to provide guidance.
Of course, as in all forms of activity, people vary in their knowledge and teaching ability. You get good and bad (and ugly!) teachers in everything.

Just out of curiosity, do you have to be qualified as an approved driving instructor (ADI) before you can be an IAM/RoSPA advanced driving instructor?

The 'party line' these days seems to be that the speed limit must be scrupulously adhered to, which means there is likely to be conflict with the majority of non-advanced drivers who would be willing to exceed the speed limit by a reasonable margin when it was safe to do so.
Interesting, alternative experience from this IAM Associate (gbuckham) ...

I usually tell associates that there's only one thing that's an automatic fail on test, and that's breaking the law. Speed limits are law. Of course, what they do afterwards is entirely up to their own conscience(*). Having said that, I don't find that sticking to 30 in a built-up area generally poses any problem (getting to 30 in rush hour - that's a problem).
(*) And I'll deny I ever said that if you repeat it

nah, bonkers, around here, everyone like erm me, who tries to drive at the speed limit has a huge tail of people champing at the bit to go faster. IAM drivers always hold up the traffic! Causing safety issues? Yes of course but its their fault for wanting to go too fast.

Very good Major. Perhaps another time. Thanks for that up-date.
Best wishes all,
Dave.

Dave.
