I'd like to improve my driving because I keep spotting small mistakes which shouldn't have happened, nothing serious but having to brake harder than I expected etc. I'm a student so can't afford expensive one-to-one tuition or intensive courses (which I don't get on with anyway) so joining the local IAM or RoSPA(ADA) group seems the sensible option. The question is which one do I go for?

I haven't managed to find anything which compares the two, are they fundamentally the same or are there distinct difference in their opinions on ways to do things?

Also is there anyone here in the Kent groups of either?

Many thanks
Hugh

I am in the IAM but I am also a member of the local Rospa ADA Group.

The "course" is IDENTICAL. This is because both organisations' methods are based on the Police System of Driving called "Roadcraft".

You can go out and buy a book called "Roadcraft" - which should be your first step. Buy it. Read it.

As to joining up - choose whichever group is most convenient for you!

You may find that since you are a student there is a discount on the fees for the IAM - as we are trying to encourage more young people to take the test.

£85 is the standard IAM fee. Depending on your age you may get that for £70. This includes "Pass Your Advanced Driving Test" (the next book you should read cover to cover), as many lessons as you need and the fee for the test.

Roadcraft (click for Amazon link) is the best £9.23 you can spend if you've not read it

Thanks for the advice, I'll go with which group meets nearest to home then! I ordered road craft this morning so hopefully will have that soon. I've also got Paul Ripleys "Expert driving" that I've dipped into from time to time, but never read cover to cover.

Expert driving is also a good book. When you see the "System Of Car Control" it will be very familiar from what you've read in "Expert Driving".
