So where do I begin to learn to really drive?

I'm 41, drive a 4ltr Chimeara, I have booked a Ride Drive day but want to really get into track days etc.

Any advice, no matter how obvious you may think would be gratefully received.

Mike,

Start here...www.iam.org.uk/

Next here...www.roada.org.uk/

Then take your pick from the various experts depending on where you live.

Or ignore the two organisations (although you do get 'training' from them at a very cheap rate) and go straight to the experts. I missed out on both and it hasn't done me too much harm.

I did IAM before HPC - and I think IAM gave me a good grounding before moving on.

I would agree though - that if your intention might be to do HPC (which I would thoroughly recommend), then there is no need to do IAM and it does take quite a while to work through. By going straight to HPC you'll learn more skill, to a higher level and faster (and better).

I did get (the beginnings of) something useful from the IAM ... observation.

Observation is a (the) key skill in "advanced" driving - and I think it has two main aspects:
- awareness, reading the road (conditions, road signs, other traffic)
- looking ahead - spotting potential dangers early, continually assessing what is ahead before you get there. This is what allows you make progress fluently on an open drive in the country, on track, or even in town.

While HPC is not a "track club" - they do hold track days and there is a keen track following. Many of the skills learned, and ceartainly the mind-set, in HPC do apply to the track.
