If it had done plenty of miles it may be worth changing the transmission oil. Does the 'box have any kind of 'learning' software? This adjusts the 'box to suit your style of driving. The previous driver may have been very gentle! This tends to happen fairly quickly though.

There are plenty of tips to hustling an auto so let us know more detail of what the problem is.

Good luck

Fluid change could be handy. Level is usually checked on autos on level ground with engine running and box warm. Still readings can be sketchy though, apparently. Depending on how it works, autos can be adjusted. On old mercs there are adjustments to the speed of shift and load/shift points.

I'm not sure what the Golf one is like, but some autos can be changed 'on the stick' and driven like a tiptronic auto, more or less going in the gear you tell them to with the selection lever. Again old Mercs are good for this and will almost instantly change into 3rd if you select '3'. Since we're in the advanced driving forum, I will add that it is very effective and in a boring way preferable to a clutch and manual. You can simply palm it into any car you wish, it does it for you and you can mostly keep both hands on the wheel and one foot on the throttle, one on the brake if that's your inclination.

Some cars I've tried this with however seem to get rather confused and might finally select 3rd gear rather unconvincingly, after a ridiculously long pause. They feel like they are not designed for actually forcing into gear with the stick.

When you force a downshift using the stick, simultaneously using the throttle to bring the revs up can smooth things out. Especially important on old Mercs because otherwise they shift very firmly and with a bang!

Also not selecting a really low gear at a stupidly high speed is advised! Old autos won't protect against this!

Let us know how it/you take it!
