Yesterday I was driving on a road I know well, entering a very fast open corner well within safe limits when suddenly I get huge understeer, I back off throttle and get grip when suddenly massive oversteer. Buttocks are by this time well clenched. eek I go down following straight slowing gradually without using brakes and go through the mental checklist. Tyres? Suspension? Diesel spill?

My attention is drawn to the farmyard detritus in the middle of the road and the strong cow smell. Neither is unusual (I live in rural Somerserset). However the stuff on road looks different.

Some way ahead I can see another car turn into a corner I have taken at 60, he is doing about 35 I'd guess. Suddenly his back end slides right out. He does well to recover and stops in safe place round corner. I could tell he thought it was his car so I pull over to point out to him that his car is fine, it is a huge slurry spill going about a mile down road where a farmer forgot to close a valve.

I grew up in the country and live in it and this is the worst I have experiences. So watch out for shiny black stuff in a line down road even in warm weather!

Sound as if you were both lucky.

Forgot to mention that from where we both stopped we could see lots of skid marks on exit of last corner where a few people had tried to regain control. At least one had failed and hit the verge.

We did call BiB to warn them of the danger

Yeurgh, nasty - glad you're OK.

I had to swerve to avoid a bag of what looked like sofa stuffing on the A1 - rang the local copshop to let them know and was stunned to be directed through to 999 operator instead.
