...new rules:

Lane 3: For crawling in the hope that the car in front (isn't a Toyota) will push the one in front of him and so on... and create a bit of a purge effect.

Lane 2: For undertaking lane 3.

Lane 1: Is for burning off the bickering lane 2 and 3 hogs.

For a demonstraion of this, head down to the A406 or A40 during rush hour.

I hate doing it but it is a necessary evil these days, especially here in Melbourne. If you flash your lights at a lane 3 dawdler they continue on their merry way completely oblivious to it. Lane Etiquette here means you don't push in at the RSL when you are ordering your counter meal!

Yes sadly I have experienced that myself today. A young man of unknown origin in a beat up honda civic on the M4 coming out of Swindon.

For some reason he wanted to undertake everyone. He then came off at Chippenham and proceeded to get whooped by an Astra VXR. After all his undertaking I still managed to get into Chippenham before him and the lovely chap in the Astra VXR who I had a spirited play with on the A350.

Yes, seen this a hell of a lot, the speed pattern you'd expect from the lanes being completely reversed as everyone seems to be trying to get as far right as possible regardless of the speed they're doing.

I'll admit I'm not above a sneaky undertake if it looks like it'll clear a big clump of traffic in one simple move.

One problem - they haven't looked in their mirrors for the past 10/50/100 miles. Or noticed the great big empty lane next door. Do you think they'll look left before pulling over for their exit?

I'd like to know how many accidents are caused by that kind of sideswipe. Those 60mph rolling roadblocks are bloody dangerous, if you ask me.

I think you're pretty safe undertaking these idiots. You'd have just as much chance of them sideswiping you when overtaking as they don't seem to have any idea as to what is happening around them left or right.

I used to make a point of moving back into the correct lane after overtaking but as soon as I do the car behind me in the overtaking lane will leap into the gap I'd just left and a line of ars in the 3rd lane would be doing 60mph bumper to bumper doing the same speed as me in lane one or two with no traffic in front of me rolleyes

As soon as I'd indicate to overtake again they'd defend their gap with their life and nobody would let me back out. Having a banged up old E280 Merc estate though means that there's always a gap wink

For those a little more nervous driving at such close proximty in such an agressive environment it'd be too scary a manouvre to do repeatedly, so when they get into lane 3 they stay there and problem gets worse rolleyes

If I flash anyone I just get brake tested so gave up on that too.

I have always hated under-takers but I now use whichever lane makes the most sense. I am fully aware that this is not the answer but I give up trying to do the right thing.

I suppose the M11 in rush hour is one of the harsher motorways, but it would be nice if everyone simply obeyed the highway code.

I now use the bike and call it "filtering" smile

I drove to the Brooklands Festival in Weybridge from South Wales. It was a 300 mile round trip and I can not believe the amount of people who refuse to go into the inside lane. I'm fairly new to driving still (driving a year and a half) but I think most "drivers" really need re-educating when it comes to Motorway driving.

I followed a guy from Newport to the Severn Bridge who drove in the middle lane the whole way, it was 7:00 Sunday morning, so the wasn't a great deal of traffic. I didn't overtake him I just made a point of making 5 lane changes to get past him!

Something that made me chuckle was a certain person that slowed down coming up to an Average speed camera and then sped away from it like a GATSO!

I have seen this more and more undertaking in the past few years.
Whereas, you would patiently sit in the 3rd lane, hoping to get to your destination as soon as possible, it now seems more and more commonn to undertake.
Certainly, If I am in lanes 2 or 3, and there is an opportunity to make progress on the left, then so be it.

Sitting in lane 3, and givint the "hurry-up" flash, like said earlier, only gets you brake tested.
So, if it's all clear on the left, just go for it.
No I don't sit in lane's 2 or 3 anymore, if i can make progress, why not.
Perfectly legal in most countries around the world.
Perhaps here to one day.

I still can't work out if this was said in all seriousness or whether it was ment to be deeply ironic.

Take a drive along the M11 / A406. That should tell you how serious (or ironic) the comment was. smile

One small flaw with those - the muppet in front actually has to LOOK IN THEIR MIRRORS to see it. [tut]

Nice idea though thumbup

I use lane 1 most of the time. As a result I end up, (and I hate the term!), undertaking quite a lot. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not doing it aggressively, It just strikes me as being a lot safer to stay in Lane 1 making as good progress as possible rather than traversing the three lanes into bunched traffic to pass one a55hole who doesn't have a clue. I'm always very conscious of the manoeuver and very wary or the moron's vehicles deportment though and try to do it only where there's a hard shoulder to move into.

The only ones worse than the aforementioned morons are the w4nk3rs who speed up after you pass them and prevent you from changing lanes when required.

Oh yeah, and there's nothing more frustrating than being in lane 3 havinmg just overtaken, then seeing there's miles of empty lane 1 and you can't get to it for these scumbags!!!

And; breathe!
