Changing your vehicle details on your registration certificate

You’ll need to update your registration certificate (V5C) if you make any changes to your vehicle or if any of the details shown on your registration certificate are incorrect. The amount of vehicle tax you pay may be affected and you will need to produce documentary evidence of the changes.
Changes you need to update

You’ll need to tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) about the following changes to your vehicle:

colour
engine
cylinder capacity
fuel type (propulsion)
replacing or modifying the chassis/monocoque bodyshell
seating capacity
weight of a goods vehicle

Change to engine and cylinder capacity (engine size)

DVLA will need written evidence of any changes to engine number and cylinder capacity (cc). Written evidence can be:

a receipt for the replacement engine
written evidence from the manufacturer
an inspection report provided for insurance purposes
written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle

I didn't bother on the last two engine swops I did,and hearing the aggravation others have had when they tried to do the right thing I'm glad I didn't.

I did, it was really easy. Invoice for the engine, invoice for the engine swap a simple letter and the log book. Invoice had to show the new engine number.

And did the road tax stay the same ?

I am going from 4.0 to 4.6 in the wedge. Now I am not clued up on the log book scenario. Is it just as simple as posted previously. And do you have to do it. If you don't what are he implications.

Hi - I'm not aware of the implications of not doing it, but I can also vouch for it being a straightforward exercise. Road tax stayed the same as it was on PLG beforehand.

Where does the engine number come from if it's an imported 'new' engine? I've been curious about this for a while. Do DVLA accept any number you give them or would they want to issue their own number? Thanks.

Doubt that, it's almost impossible to see the whole number on the chim/griff with out removing the exhaust manifold

I'm sure it's even harder on other engines

i did mine, dead easy, has no effect on tax. engine number on LS is stamped on the block (on every one of the 4 ive handled anyway)

There are a lot of Caterfields with 711M as the engine number...
