Not mine, but this is what it should look like inside.. There must be a spike in the centre on collector..

Edited by Kokkolanpoika on Thursday 19th May 19:45
I can tell you the spike is worth about 4bhp.

Time to update this as it has been quite a while. I Have been waiting and waiting and waiting for the chap who I commissioned a 4.8lt short engine build, to deliver on the promises but having now missed a whole year I have decided to give up on that route and have had my hand forced higher up my back now as the original 4.5lt engine I have been racing with decided to drop a valve head in at Thruxton four months ago and the engine will take a fair bit of time and money to repair as you can imagine.

So I have now purchased a 5lt all singing and dancing full engine from JE which was a cancelled order sat on his shelve ready for dyno work. He is going to finish off the work and change a couple of things for me and we should take delivery mid January. In the mean time I have been very busy with other things on the car such as repairing some accident damage down one side and decided to refresh the whole car so have re-sprayed the whole car and now I am nearly ready to paint the front engine bay chassis area while I,m at it. It is an original 1989 challenge car so after all these years been thrashed round a race track I thought I would give it a bit of TLC without loosing the patina of an old race car.

Yep peter will post up a spec once I have it should be a few days. Boosted is right, custom pistons take a while . I was using Ross Racing in the USA 6 - 12 week lead time but you can buy them off the shelve here in uk.

Your 50mm TB's are pretty large, interesting to know if your inlet ports are all 50mm to match.
yep blended manifold to match. What do you think to your engine and the way it makes it,s power? Did you build it ? Bit of a leap into the dark for me.

The spec is very similar to mine except 5.2, 48mm TBs and a 234 hydraulic cam. Power delivery is fantastic right through the range and delivering 335/354 at the wheels. Sound of intake is awesome, you won't be disappointed!

Is this going in a road car? The biggest issue I had with mine was emissions. If you bought the xover of the guy I spoke to he also had problems with emissions. It cost a fortune to put right which included a change of ECU. If your changing ECU pick your mapper first!!! Pm me if you want more info.

Keep us posted on progress and good luck
This set up is going in this..........

So shouldn,t have any emission problems winkI will be using Omex 710 ECU and the chap who looks after my cars specializes in supply and fit of them with in house rollers, he has my Chevrolet version of the car flying on the Omex set up.

Ian Richardson build the bottom end.. myself and a mate the top end.

Engine is still being mapped - idles beautifully with the M256 but need to do the tricky bit, the progression. Revs nice, sounds great. Have not driven it on the road yet.

My Manifolds are very straight .. you can clearly see the backs of the valves.

We were just having a laugh with the turbo ..

went to fetch the beauty yesterday. So finally things have moved on. Quietly excited as I think this is going to be a good step from what I had before Thruxton. Not much action now till the new year and I have to finish the repainting first and reassemble the front end, Christmas & new year will get in the way and, and, and ................

chassis looking pretty good......

And hopefully the race winner..............

Yep Mr...

I will definatly give that offer some serious thought and I expect I will get back to you say in about five years wink. I have been looking at the Dyno graph that came with the engine and have compared it with what I had on the 4.5lt on carbs. Interestingly the extra 500cc adds a good amount of torque , possibly a bit high up the rev range but that can be brought down with some mapping. I have not seen a dyno graph before so am still in the dark a bit as to how the engine will feel in the real world, once I have transmission loss etc. The trick will be setting it up so on gear change we still drop the next gear shift into the thick of the torque. All exciting stuff.

The engine spec of my engine will be very similar to all the other serious engines as that from experience is what works the best. I,m not trying to invent the wheel. The x over manifold and TB,s I hope will give me a bit more mapping scope over carbs. My set up was quad 48 dellorto down draft with tvr short manifold al a Challenge spec. Big Carbs, let there be no mistake, are pretty awesome for supporting big power, Iv,e loved them for 12 years.

Thanx for that picture , I had seen it. That is the set up I am going for with slightly different arrangement for cold air feed. More dyno work has been done since that picture was taken.

Hi Peter,

Hope you ok and well, it is from a boat engine but you could use a small komatsu digger version. The pictures should answer any other questions although there is some fine tuning to do to the bottom hanging but near enough. You could use a Brise unit, better quality and much more money to boot. If I had a bigger budget I would go Brise or Vosp not much to choose between either of those. Basically all of them are a Denso unit . I'm already into three race entries so pennies are tight at the moment although having said that Yanmar is good stuff for the money, i'm told by my local boat yard.

Alan your right double pulley to clear the oil pump drive, I was hoping to mount alternator to the hanging bracket of the pump but the exhaust pipe gets in the way and after more thought and consideration more heat down there to deal with.

Putting me to shame with the little work I have had to do. Will be good for you to post up here what you have been doing to them ETC.
A bit more progress in the right direction now. Just ordered the water hoses, fuel pump, filters etc and new swirl pot , and all the wiring should be going in soon as.

Ok the engine is in and running. Tested last weekend at Castle Combe GT's with not such a good out come as some of you will already know. Up shot of the mishap was a split oil line, resulting in one lap, could have happened to any car so that is that. Oil line replaced and moving forward to Silverstone in two weeks. Will let you know in real world what the car feels like once we get some laps in. In the mean time..........................

As you can see from the graph dotted line is what we had with old engine , solid line new engine. More work to be done on mapping as it is ultra safe at the moment until we get some miles on it, then it will be remapped to full potential . Looking at it we can do a bit more certainly around the 4700 to 5700 mark. Also bear in mine this has been tuned for the track and you would want to move the power and torque up for road use I would think. As I say I will let you know how we get on shortly.
