Also if in lightweight sports car. You’d probably want the aluminium block not the cast iron variants.
I expect that an Iron block LS will weigh about the same lighter. There's added benefits to an LS motor which is the ECU which runs everything (fuel injection, ecu etc) It's pretty much stand alone if you remove it with the wiring harness.

The problem with the iron blocks, apart from their weight is that they're usually crudded up and rusted up. I've worked on 3 and they were all truly aweful. I hate the things. It's because being truck engines they're worked hard and neglected. The alloy engines are ususlly looked after, oil changed etc.

I once worked on an ls1 that had 4 late piston rod combos and 4 early piston rod combos inside. At was a crappy engine and everything was tarnished the same colour inside. I'd say it was assembled that way from new. I suspect it came from Oz. It must have been out of balance.

If I lived in the US the cast iron LT blocks would appeal for price and availability. But in the U.K. they will be relatively pricey and you are still paying the weight penalty. The Jag engine can be had for as little as £300 from a scrappy if you don’t mind n/a.

Such a shame there aren’t easy bolt in solutions for them. I know they don’t have the aftermarket tuning potential of the LS, due to lack of parts being sold in the after market. But I’d have thought they aren’t a bad way to get 450-600hp in supercharged form with some bolt on mods.

As for the LS. They are awesome, I’m on my 2nd wink

In pretty much the last 20 years, long life coolant has been the norm so this is not as much of a problem as it was. Furthermore Americans tend to take care of their cars better than people in the UK. 3-5k mile oil changes are still the norm as oil changes are pretty cheap. Sure you can find a worn out one but if you walk into a junk yard and ask for an LS motor. They'll have 50 sitting on shelves so you pick the one that you want. Unless the block is cracked, a full rebuild is about $1500 incl labor. That's machine work, pistons, bearings, rings etc.

UK customers can't really inspect them internally so they buy on price either from here or the US and take a gamble. Much like buying from a scrap yard here. I've not seen coolant gallery issues just baked on crap inside the engine.

If you're talking about carbon build up then yes, a high mileage engine will have that. If you're planning on pulling the heads then this could easily cleaned up. The last pair of heads that I had done were for a Chrysler 440 and it cost me $600.

Yep, if you can find an engine, it can be done for that.
