I've had my S90 D4 Momentum for a month now and have done 1500 miles. Lovely car but somewhat boring. Passengers keep falling asleep (that's a good thing, given it's the missus and two kids), but I get sleepy too, especially when bum heating is on.

Averaging 42.5 mpg apparently (from the dash), but not convinced the numbers are correct. I'd say it's more like 33-35 mpg.

One thing I find slightly annoying is the 'miles until empty' indicator as it changes based on what seems like trip mpg, so I start with let's say 200 miles left, 2 miles later it's showing 140 miles and then when I get on the motorway it slowly climbs up back to 200.

Anyway, the real reason why I'm posting is that I have recently received a recall notification followed by 3 lights that started coming up on the dash (City Safety, Driver Assistance and Adaptive Headlights). Took it to the dealership today for the recall software update, which I've been told is related to the lights on the dash to get it sorted.

I swear the car is a lot snappier now. Throttle is much more responsive and it doesn't rev as high in 1st and 2nd gear anymore. Hoping that maybe it also resolved the miles until empty issue. Additionally, software update has finally fixed sensus so it can connect to the internet via bluetooth on my phone.

I’ve had my V90 D4 since July and have done 4K and the computer is showing an average of 42mpg on a mixed drive. I thought it would be more, but not too fussed.

2 things that currently annoy me, however I’m sure there are solutions!

1. When trying to find artists/albums on Bluetooth, is there any easier way to search than literally having to swipe with my finger? Sometimes I do this, press a song and it doesn’t select but kicks me out! Annoying!

2. Is there a button for the heated wing mirrors? Can’t seem to get them to clear?

Think the heated mirrors will come on if you press to heat the rear screen.

Anything to do with media on the V90 is hatefully (lack of) thought out.

MPG update
T4 at its first refill

On account of not commuting the car and being away for a large chunk of the 13 days Ive had it the fuel light has only just come on for the first time

The car has done 203 miles since I brimmed it immediately after leaving the dealer
It has just swallowed 42l of unleaded
So I can confidently say that its first 203 miles yielded a consumption of 22mpg eek

This involved 80 miles on the motorway network, about the same on dual carriageways/fast A roads and the rest (minority) in town
Its been driven with mechanical sympathy so not ragged at all

Hopefully Im going to have the same transition as Soup and Patrick into a world of better consumption

Finally I tried 'eco' mode today which resulted in a fogged screen with just me and a passenger which mirrored 'eco pro' in my departed 3 series, a nice idea but bloody useless for the marginal gains it delivers.

Oh and second 'finally' I think the heated mirrors need the rear screen heater activated which kind of makes sense from an economy point of view - I live in hope........

Cheers

I think many got the 90 or the 60 via the Santander financing offer which was at the link below. No idea what their prices are like now, but it was best to call them and ask as the prices they are showing weren't a great indication - and the petrol prices were much lower than diesel.

Can get a v90 D4 R-Design - no extras, 15k miles P.A, on 9 + 23 for £325 - appears to be a decent deal.

Tempted to cancel Volvo S90 and get the 1st choice Jag XF deals.
Not 100% sure though.

I have done some research and tried to list the pros and cons of each one. I would lose £300 if i cancelled the S90.
Hopefully this will help some of you decide. Tried to bold the good parts.
All the options look good deals at less than 20% but i will probably need more than 5k miles even though have an MX-5 on lease to use as well. Could just about get away with 5k miles and use the MX-5 to cover the excess. Golf R going back March has done 7.5k miles in two years. Put 1.5k on MX-5.

Main pros of Jaguar are bigger fuel tank, faster, heated screen, rear camera and better handling and performance.
Main pros of Volvo are pilot assist, cheaper, metallic paint, more comfortable.

Usual routes are motorway to work for 15 minutes, not at rush hour in the morning. Evenings rush hour home. Try to avoid busy routes so about 30 minutes drive back using more back roads, but still motorway at some parts.

Now is pilot assist that much better on the road? When i tested it, i found it amazing. A similar queue function in the Jaguar costs £1400 so no way i am paying that.
Dad is getting the Jaguar so could always borrow his or swap for a week.

Pricing

Volvo S90 £37.5k
Jaguar £42k

^^^^ have you driven them?

I found the Jag to be pretty uninspiring and very dated inside
The Volvo doesnt pretend to be a drivers car which isnt what I wanted anyway, I had an XF Estate for 24h over the summer in R Sport spec and that certainly had a large whiff of barge about it too rather than scalpel sharp sports car pretender

Ive been in my V90 for 2 weeks now and its lovely, its nice to have adaptive cruise again which I missed in my previous car and the pilot assist seems pretty good too on motorways and dual carriageways

The Volvo metallics are free as you say and have a nice premium feel, I dont have a reverse camera and really dont feel the need although may have a different opinion if Id become used to it on another car.

Finally the winter pack on the Volvo is just over 500 quid and adds heated screen, washer nozzles and headlamp wash in addition to the heated wheel. Reality is while once Id have wanted these the Volvo smartphone app lets you either schedule a remote start and warm up with the car locked and secure or lets you activate it manually from your phone so its toasty when you hop in

But then Im biased, and very happy. So much so that I just bought some overpriced dealer accessories as Im pretty certain I will get into another when my lease ends

Cheers!

I had an XF estate as a courtesy car a few years back. Unless it's changed in the intervening time, I found the interior to be uninspiring, and the rear accommodations to be pokey.

Also the spec of the two cars in basic form is light years apart. I think the Jag may even be on 17s as standard.

Ok, after 9 months of ownership of a v90 d4, am I alllowed to admit that the gearbox is awful???

I came from a Golf Gti dsg, which I cant expect it to compete with but every decision that
Gear box makes is so slow, clunky and horrible! 😬😬

Mines about a month old, and the only problem I have with the gearbox is the thump it gives in reverse on a cold morning. Other than that, it's fine. I wonder if there's a recent software update.

I have a V90 Inscription. Does anyone else have the problem that when the car comes to a stop and engine switched off it sometimes does a little dance backwards or forwards before engaging the parking brake? (I have it set to auto apply).

Parking brake engages only if it needs to. If you're on a slight slope and you don't switch the engine off, but take your foot off the brake, it rests on the gearbox parking lock rather than the parking brake. The rocking you feel is the slight slop in the gearbox. It's common to most auto cars - my A7 used to do it too.

I’m 8 months in now and overall the V90 is great. My biggest bug bear is the well documented gear box, the hesitation at roundabouts is starting to annoy me, I am hoping there is a software update when it gets serviced.

Of course you are, the automatic gearboxes on Volvos are terrible, sluggish and clunky. They need updating urgently.

I'm afraid that there is currently no software update.

Mine was in recently and the head technician told me that the number one complaint he is asked to investigate on these is the crap gear change.

It's a very frustrating car.

So close to being great but with too many (small'ish) flaws which keep it from being so.

I had hoped that the Polestar upgrade would sort out the gearbox but it does not.

We ought to accept it's a car you can't enjoy hustling. It's a ship and it needs handling like a ship. Captain the thing and ride the waves!

Fortunately, after a week of deciding not to find any WiFi, our has now gone back to working again. I can now resume hating the awful Spotify app. Joy!
