Former Volvo owner here.

I want to like this car. It looks fantastic and I'm sure it drives well. But I cannot, in good conscience, buy a car from a Chinese owned company.

Most Chinese companies are, at least in part, state owned. This means that whenever you buy Chinese, you are supporting a brutal, totalitarian dictatorship with an appalling human right record. As much as I may like this car, I'm afraid Chinese ownership is a deal breaker.

Sorry, but Chinese Volvo is dead to me.
Damn, Lotus as well!

That really shows how far the design has come on. Old one looks like a frumpy old Hyundai.
The other looks like a 5 series...

So, using your rationale, out of principle you will also not:

  • Eat Weetabix/Alpen/Ready Brek
  • Use a Hoover
  • Shop in Hamleys
  • Use Pirelli tyres
  • Shop in House of Fraser
  • Shop in Superdrug
  • Eat in Pizza Express
As they're all owned or predominantly owned by the Chinese?

I can honestly say that I care not who owns a company. I care what the product is like?

It's a pretty unflattering photo of the old V60 to be honest...

They're both the default side profile view from Volvo's website.

Really? I don't know about the bigger 60/90 series, but we've currently got a V40 D4 (190bhp) as a courtesy car and that only emits 99g/km (so free VED band). Pretty impressive I'd say. And it goes like a stabbed rat - it's pretty quick, for what it is.

Go Volvo!

Yes, against BMW engines they're a mile behind when comparing like for like (190 bhp auto for example). Makes a big difference I your company car bill, especially when the list price is very close for a decent spec.

It looks nice outside (although they are processed photos so clearly will show the design in its best light) Inside it's OK I don't like the vertical tablet makes the dash look a bit upright and thin, I'd prefer a landscape one.

The Hybrid 400hp model is interesting if it has a decent electric range and not another hybrid with a token 30 mile range.

It looks very nice... But unless I'll wait to judge it until I see what the petrol options are (as the configurator only has diseasels as an option) as well as how it drives.

The XC90 T8 I had for a weekend test drive managed 17 miles on the battery.

Couple that with a tiny 50 litre fuel tank and the fact we tow a caravan made me walk away from it quite smarts...15mpg towing!!

You see that's disappointing you'd have been better with a X5M and 575hp.....(not sure if it can have a tow bar)

Why can't they produce a 400hp hybrid with 150miles range on electric? And a decent fuel tank.

I see what you mean, but it's too narrow a view of modern Chinese society and government.
It would be rather similar to refusing to buy a Ford-era Volvo because of concerns about Iraq and non-existent WMDs, and that would be too narrow and unnuanced a view of a whole country.

Horses for courses, frankly 17 miles would do me perfectly for ~95% of my personal use. My commute (when I actually go in to the office) is 14 miles. I have days I only do ~3Mi in a day (It's only timing and that I'm picking up the children stops me walking or cycling that). Hell I've had weeks I've not managed to do 17miles!

My issue is that so many now are <2l and would need to exceed 39mpg on a run to break even with my business payments which in a big estate is tricky from petrol. In comparison I only need to hit 25mpg now as my car is >2l.

Looks lovely - a smaller and better proportioned V90. Shame it doesn’t come in anything more than a 4 pot engine though.
V60 does look nice indeed! Same applies to XC60, better proportioned and much nicer looking than XC90.

That was my thinking initially. It would be perfect for my daily commute into the office, only a 7 mile journey each way. But then taking into account seeing customers is about 14,000 miles a year plus towing the caravan for another 3-4000miles a year it looked a much less tempting proposition.

I had a Disco 4 and swapped it out for a fully loaded Skoda Superb. Huge boot, massive spec, comfortable, tows well (not as good as the Disco granted), great economy, job done.

Looked at the V90 but the boot was not big enough.

The tax might be worth it if the AWD wasn't front biased and the car too small. Not a fault with the Volvo, I'm just really picky wink
Actually with everything in sport mode it switches to rear bias...if only slight.

Just a update

The new s60, will launch in Europe with no Diesel engine! Petrol and hybrid only, with Volvo dropping diesels rather quickly by the looks of it
