New shape XC90 Economy

We have a 65 plate D5 Momentum.

On a motorway run, with two bikes on the roof, we are getting about 35mpg when cruising at 85/90. This seems pretty poor to be honest - not much better than our old shape one.

What are other people getting?

Our 18 plate Momentum D5 on a motorway run is around 40-42mpg. I don't think that's too bad for the size of the thing and the fact it's an auto.

Not entirely sure, but I suspect not hugely dissimilar - it's significantly better than our old mk1 XC90

At that speed and with bikes on the roof I don't think that sounds too bad to me. Have you seen what you get if you ease off the gas? Or with nothing attached to the roof?

2018 R line, had it for a week and best I’ve managed so far is 38mpg on an a road commute. Was hoping for a bit better TBH. Having said that, very, very impressed with the car overall.

2018 D5 inscription pro. 7k miles on the clock now.

Average is 30.5 with a mix of town and motorway run.

Normally see late 30s on a motorway run at typical motorway speeds (although I do tend to use the pilot assist)

Are they motorbikes then?

The additional wind resistance of two bikes will be having a huge affect at that speed. Try sticking a hand out of a window or sunroof and you can feel what sort of resistance and bike handlebars, pedals and seats will be an even greater force.

I would suggest at those speeds and that much wind resistance that you are getting great fuel economy.

If you tried 70 mph for same journey, you would more than likely get there in about the same time as you can never keep to the 85/90 owing to having to slow down/accelerate back up to those speeds and therefore adding to your fuel consumption

If you want better economy, why did you buy that sort of car anyway?

I concur. Sit at 70. Pretty sure the economy of any car takes a significant hit at the speeds you're talking about.

put the bikes on back rather than roof as an experiment

I have done a lot of motorway miles in my V90 D4 with and without Thule aerobars. I'm about 4-5mpg down with the bars on - and that's with no bikes attached! It's crazy how much drag affects the mpg especially at higher speeds.
