I've just bought a yellow Volvo T5-R and it needs a few things doing — I think the PCV valve, the most significant — a service and a tune up

Does anyone have any recommendations in or around London (west)?

Thanks in advance

Depends how far you wish to travel, but an hour up the M40 will take you to AR Mills in Middleton Cheney, they are a family run Volvo specialist..

I can 100% recommend them, they have 30+ years experience servicing Volvos. They have courtesy cars as well.

Again, depends how far you want to travel, this place is in Worcester Park.

When I took my C30 there they were working on everything from P1800s onwards.

Two guys who I use

Tim Williams Coalville
Drew Spencer Kettering

Wouldn’t trust anyone else with our 850R

Drew has practically built our 850 from the ground up the last 10 years

Walkertech Cars in Chalfont St Giles. Probably the most local Volvo specialist to you.

I wouldn't go anywhere near Tim Williams, he is a total scammer.

Tim Williams a total scammer??

Really, he’s been nothing but an absolute pleasure to deal with, very knowledgeable, up front and tells you how things are.

If we are talking about scammers Shemtek hes got to be up there with regards to this. Do not take your Volvo to him.

An extraordinary observation about just the most knowledgeable and trustworthy specialist in the maintenance and modification of these cars......

Tim is based in Coalville in Leicestershire. I can message his contact details if required.

Not BS at all. Lovely chap when you meet him and are spending money with him, con artist when you find he shimmed a cracked block and given you a big bill and essentially the car is uneconomical to repair just over a year later due to his "work".

Why on Earth would anyone lie about it? confused

He’s always offered me some great help and advice regardless whether I’ve spent money with him or not. Always been helpful and considerate,

He has said about a lot of people who’ve contacted him and bought a cheap Volvo with a dream of running 350bhp and just want him to map it, no other supporting mods etc, when he’s told them what they require to run such a build and power, the customer has told them there is no room in the budget for that!! They aren’t even prepared to stage 0 a car!!

Dreamers and chancers and people who want to run a car on a shoe string, yet want ultimate race car performance.

Like I said, you take people as you find, him and Drew have been brilliant In my own personal experience.

Another happy Gb Autos customer. Real car guys. I now MOT my Caterham there after discovering them with our xc90. A bit of a trek from Fulham but well worth it (they are in Cheam/Worcester Park). Proper specialists who really love Volvo’s.

Absolutely NOT BS. Couple other customers of his have had terminal issues due to his "builds". Lots of cash. No paperwork........just like another "Volvo Specialist' down in Gloucestershire.

I seen was far from being the only one. You won't find this information on Volvo forums as they delete it amd kick members.

Copy and paste reply from one customer listing faults on recent Tim build…..he’s
cut off communication with this person. Well renowned Volvo mapper…..

Tim Williams assembled the engine in return of a tune.

The problems so far:

1. Oil pan was installed so that it was offset on gearbox end. It had to be inline otherwise gearbox wont fit - I fixed

2. Oil pan threads (3) were destroyed - I fixed

3. Oil pump had thread pieces between pump body and engine block - I fixed

4. Piston cooling valve leaked oil pressure - I fixed

5. Third cylinder rod cap was installed other way around (cracked big end). Bearing was installed upside down and trashed - I fixed

6. Oil pickup had two worn o-rings installed instead of one proper as it should - I fixed

7. I don’t even know what else is wrong with it.

This is the short block. I made a deal that he cleans, checks and assembles everything with correct tolerances and puts new bearings and piston rings etc.

Any doubters feel free to PM me for number and I’ll whatsapp the pictures!

One of the plus points to an R or similar is that they're no different to your average T5 which really isn't that far removed from the basic models so there's nothing really that "specialist" on a R model unlike say, owned an RS6 or similar where a lot of it is bespoke. So on that basis, you're average, old school mechanic with a bit experience with Volvos of that era should be fine/ Likewise they need to attract specialist labour charges or parts costs. As a 90's performance icon, they're actually pretty cheap and easy to maintain. Plenty online too, lots of good guys still out there who really know their stuff but don't go for the whole fawning over nonsense like some do.

PCV is actually a fairly straight forward task though I think I'm right in saying the complete kit is no longer supplied and you need to buy a couple of hoses separately now but it's basically inlet manifold off which isn't to bad than remove and replace the assorted hoses down the front and around the side of the head, the flame trap and anything else that's suffering the ravages of times whilst you're in there - vacuum hoses are the prime suspects but should generally be replaced as part of the fabled "Stage 0" tune to get everything back in spec before you go chasing power or miles.

That is just nonsense. The Volvo owning and tuning community is quite cohesive and no forum, FB page or similar social media Volvo interest platform would edit out any adverse comment on a trader, they are always left for comment to be made and conclusions to be reached. Tim Williams is not denigrated on any of them 'cos quite simply he has a good reputation. It is as simple as that.

Shows what you know then. I and many other people are banned from D5T5 and other forums due to this scamming clown.

Say a bad word and boom your gone. Thats why there is little negative info.

Methinks your single handed campaign against this particular very highly regarded specialist in the maintenance and upgrading of these Volvos fails on the single salient point that T5D5 was taken down about 4 years ago by its owner and, with the exception of the near dormant VPCUK website and the well frequented and carefully moderated VOC site there is little to no accessable media where antagonists like you can air their detrimental views. Fair enough there are a few FB pages which I frequent and I have never, ever seen any evidence posted there concerning bad experiences with Tim Williams. In fact the very opposite with many commendations of him.
