1998 V40 issue

Hi All,
A mate of mine has a 1998 V40 2.0 Petrol which he uses for work. He's messaged me last night to see if I can assist as hes not into cars at all, all of a sudden last night the car will only go into 5th gear with the engine on or off. Won't go into any other gear even reverse.
I thought straight away maybe the shifter cables have broke but hes had a quick look at they look intact and bushes look good. Any ideas?
Said I might be able to pop out this afternoon as hes about 30 miles away.
