We're looking very seriously at a new XC60 for our next family car, most likely an R Design diesel on a 4 year PCH deal. One of the things I'd like to have is a towbar fitted so we can take our family bikes out and about more but without the hassle of putting them on the roof which we do now. However, looking at the configurator on the website, the only option is the retractable one for over £1k which seems a bit much for something we'd only use occasionally.

I understand towbar prep comes on all Volvos now so what are our options for an aftermarket one and how much would it likely cost? Is it something I could fit myself? I know absolutely nothing about them so not sure the best way to go about it!

I had a detatchable towbar fitted to my Volvo V60 with 7 pin for £525 recently at a towbar specialist.
Very good quality and worth buying a 13 pin adaptor. I bought a brand new 4 cycle carrier for £199 that fits straight onto the towbar.
You should shop around as you will find one much lower than £1000.

Sorry to go off tangent, but what's the 4 bike rack in your picture? Does it have the tilt function & can you access the boot space with the tilt function?
I am planning to buy a 4 bike tow rack, and the BUZZ RACK Eazzy was a possibility, so be good to hear any other options too.

Yes, it has the tilt function. You can have all the bikes on and still get access to the boot.
Available on ebay. I much prefer this set up. Of course there is much cheaper options but having the tow bar is an added bonus.
