Hello all,

Looking at buying a V70. Which engine would you recommend for economy? I want Automatic so driveE is out.

I currently have a 3.0d BMW which is completely pointless given the traffic cameras around these days, cost of fuel and expensive road tax.

Don't want it to struggle on the hills though and ULEZ would be advantageous but not crucial.

Many thanks.

The D3 all day long, based on a D5 so is very reliable and has that nice 5 pot noise.
It's a 2 litre not a 2.4 so more fuel efficient.
Not to be confused with the PSA based 2.0D on earlier cars...

Although the pick of the engines is definitely the twin turbo D5.

They are Euro 5 so not ULEZ, except the very very late model D4s which got the new VEA engines. These have problems with oil consumption and piston rings on the very early versions of this engine.

Thank you for your reply.

V70s seem to be as rare as Hens teeth at the moment and seem to be very expensive. They are obviously a very good car.

What's your budget?

V70's range from 1998, sub £500 bangers to £25k+ for a end of line example... so quite a broad spectrum of engines in there too.

I have a 2003 V70 that I've done over 100,000 motorway miles in. I can attest to the D5 engine being a cracker for that purpose. Only issues I've had in that time was a split turbo pipe and the intercooler replaced.
