I suggest getting yourself signed up to http://www.vpcuk.org/ and look around.
I had a 1998 V70R (also 2.3L turbo) and was getting 27mpg average.
It is quite a heavy car.

in my 850 T5 Auto i get 30mpg using it daily for work and 35mpg on a run

the V70's are a bit heavier so thats prob why the fuel economy isnt so good!

have you looked at the V70 D5's ?

If you're looking for a Phase 2 T5 then fuel consumption really shouldn't be a high priority. Between 20 and 30 MPG is standard depending on driving conditions.

Don't expect much over 20 in town and 30 on M-ways.

Despite the usual claims of performance a D5 is prety lame as standard against a T5, it's just like any other "TDI" plenty of oomph, but hoplessly short legged.

And yes I have driven one against another. There is a sensation of lots of torque, but it doesn't last. And if you really batter a D5 then the fuel consumption can fall into the 20's

It's that old choice, Performance or economy.

V70 Phase 2 unladen weight is about 1470Kg, so not that heavy

Not quite true. The standard current, (from '06 has 185bhp and a ton of torque. It all happens much lower down the rev range - presumably what you mean by it being hopelessly short legged - and revving the bum off it is truly pointless. Drive it to match it's output parameters and it's a gem.

So many people do not seem to understand, or want to understand, diesels. Revs are not everything.
