Dear All - I've just bought a 1999 T reg Volvo SE T5 manual and I'm well happy with it; got it at a demon price with full Volvo Service History and 97k on the clock. It needs a good clean inside and out, the wheels need re-furbing and rear bumper needs painting as a few scrapes but other than that it looks fantastic.

I'm new to Volvo ownership and there's a few questions I have:-

Is it possible to get a plastic tray for the boot? It's my daily car but also will be used for towing my racer and tools and I don't want to damage the boot. I would have thought it is and if so where's best to buy?
What is the best tyre pressures to use (normal and towing)? The handbook doesn't seem to list them in a format I recognise (like bar or psi!!) and the info by petrol cap is hard to read - think it says 34 all round for normal loads.
Do they all crash and bang over bumps/road undulations? Mine seems quite hard (hence the tyre pressure question too) and just wondered if normal.
I want to get a tow bar; is it best to get a dealer fitted one, one from a scrap yard or a proper after-market one?
And finally is there anything I should be aware of?

Sorry for all the questions and if anyone can recommend a forum for me where it might be better to ask the above then please point me in the right direction. Cheers!!

What this shower do not know - is not worth knowing !

http://www.volvot5.co.uk/

think their new name is ....

vpuk.org

Yes a bootliner is available - the Volvo one is rare.
They all crash and bang especially over speed humps.
Towbars are available - both genuine and aftermarket are equally good.
Tyre pressures is subjective, as is tyre choice - think I used to run 32(f) and 34 (r) I used to avoid the Pirellis and went with Michelins or Bridgestones.

You're probably best visiting ebay for a bootliner....there are loads on there, although you might not get an offical Volvo one.

I had to check my tyre pressures the other day, and I'm not sure what measurement the maunual uses. I went for all round 34's and it doesnt seem to have affected the ride at all.

Its nice to know that the dealer doesnt check tyre pressures at all, although in fairness, I'm not sure if they're supposed to on a annual service?

Hi Gregor, joined the T5 club then!

Mine doesn't knock and bang - but it does whistle like billy-o when it comes on boost at low-ish revs when it's not that warm.

Being white, with holes in the roof, I don't have any issues with the boot, in fact mine doesn't have boot floor at all!! I built a load carrier for the back, so I can chuck my tools & spares in the boot. Also carries my auxillary battery, and a pile of communications kit.

Mine's an early 2005 (facelift) job, done 125K now, needs a set of plugs/service.

I'll concur with the tyre pressures, and avoidable brands. I use Goodyear Excellence (as per plod spec) which seem to be damn good!

Hi guys, apologies for the delay in replying and thanks for the all the advice.

I've joined the T5 club (not had time to log-on though!!) and have looked at ebay for a bootliner, looks best option and I think as mine is a '99 V70 that I can use an 850 bootliner - does that sound right?

The tyre pressures when I got the car were 45 (!!) all round (from a well-respected Volvo dealer too) and the change has made a small difference but it does still bang and crash over bumps and ripples but I suppose I'll get used to that.

Other than that am really pleased with it (can't get the cruise control to work but I think that's user-error), it's quick, comfortable, not too bad on fuel (is normal unleaded the best or should I look at Super?) and when it's clean it looks really good and I'm looking forward to using it more now.

Are the front top suspension bushes worn? - Quite common on T5's - fairly cheap and easy to sort though - ask your garage to check them next time its in for a service

They have an electonic wastegate control - when they are cold the engine map holds the wastegate open to prevent any pressure build up to stop damaging the turbo - i.e. the turbo spins but holds little or no boost until warmed up - mine does it for about 5 minutes then shuts up - its a clever design and prolongs the life of the turbo
