Volvo 850 with high emissions

My MIL went to MOT her -93 model 850 GLE the other day, and it failed on emissions, the readings, with the allowed ones in brackets:

CO 8,3 (0,5) HC 585 (100)
CO 2500 1,8 (0,3) Lambda 0,91 (0,96-1,04)

The car drives perfectly, no smoking or poor running, no varning lights on dash. Am I totally wrong in believing that emissions like the above should be noticed in poor performance and/or other problems with the car?

Any qualified guesses on where to start? I have a spare 855 -96 to take parts from if necessary.

mine old 850 failled in the same way a couple of years back but a bottle of forte later and she flew through ask the garage where you had a mot for some they should stock it

Unfortunately this is Sweden, no forte here and MOT's are done by state run specialist stations, not the friendliest of places. I'll try to give it a bottle of injector cleaner and see what gives.

sounds like a good idea you might be able to get forte though ebay if you can find someone to ship it over to you

All sorted, the cat had given up, new one fitted and emissions are legal again.
