Assuming this isn't a wind up, the S80 is a bigger and higher end car, the same way a 5-series is bigger than a 3-series. They do look similar though and share some bits.
Looks the bloody same to me (and its not a wind up).

Whereas the 5 series is clearly different visually to the 3 series.
Sorry I thought you were joking too
that is like saying the same about the A4 and A6

look at two of them side by side..the differances are very obvious
the S80 is a much bigger car

I honestly don't mind. I mountain bike a fair bit on the interior will get dirty/sitting in shorts etc. Personal preference as well I guess smile
If thats the reason then I suggest you need the leather interior even more so.

My V70 is now a stable hack , just get in it and drive.

It has also had muddy mountain bikes just thrown in the back , drop the front wheel and in she goes ,clen the bike when I get home , and a quick wipe of the inteior and al is well.

Thats with the beige leather interior too smile
+1 for Leather...baby wipes clean it in an instant

Well, I now have a very dead V70....

Started surging slightly on the M1 this evening, about 60 miles from home. I knocked the cruise control off, and slowed down, it went into limp mode, then died. RAC chap couldn't get it going, so it got recovered back home (saved a bit of fuel though there's always a silver lining).

Going to have a poke around with the fuel system tomorrow, otherwise it'll be getting dragged to a garage on Tuesday.

That was the culmination of a not great week in reliability terms, the windscreen split on Wednesday whilst I was washing the car (hot screen/cold water and a hitherto unnoticed small chip), on Friday I determined that the intercooler is probably split/leaking, and now this.

Oh well, these things happen I guess.
Doesn't sound so good...hope you got this sorted?

To update my quest for a either a S60 or V70 D5...

Having struggled to find anything suitable/tidy/within budget I threw caution to the wind and pondered over T5 powered cars for a bit before talking myself out of the idea and going back to search for a D5. nContacted three potential cars, two on Autotrader and one on Pistonheads. Grand total of... zero replies. Sent e.mails, tried ringing, left a couple of texts. Northing. Became very fed up with trying and yet failing to offload £5,000 on somebody so decided instead to buy an older 2.5D V70 for rattling around in whilst wondering what to do with the remaining £3,500. So, got a Volvo and it's a diesel but wasn't quite what I was after but seems an old old bus... few issues but nowt that can't be sorted, on that note... time to post an issue!

Regards
Shame you couldn't find a good seller - I think these cars are quite in demand at the moment but it is no excuse for not getting in touch with potential buyers! The old engine is quite good anyway and you've saved yourself a lot of money. Is it in the Mk 1 or 2 V70?
no surprise tbh...autotrader is full of wkers, I bought mine through the owners forum smile

but yeah they are in high demand (for a good reason) so finding a good one is not very easy...it took me ages to find mine

Just to bump this back up the listings a bit, I changed the intercooler on mine today. It's nowhere near as tough a job as my tame Volvo mechanic, or the forums would have you believe. I didn't do it the Haynes (or official) way either, that involves dropping all the coolant, jacking the car up and firkling the radiator and intercooler combined out under the front bumper.

I popped the front bumper off for a better look, then removed the headlamps, slam panel plus a couple of other bits and pieces, and slid the intercooler out from between the rad and the aircon heat exchanger.

Total time 3 hours, including a couple of cups of tea and a lunch break. Not bad for a first attempt I thought.

The car seems happier for it too. Time will tell if there's been any improvement in mpg (fingers crossed).
good info thanks

I have a spare cooler for mine, so I'm ready if/when mine pops
I got it FOC via a Techy friend, it came off a rear-ended write-off.....I took it off myself, wasn't s problem to get too I did the same as you did

so far mmine is holding fast and dry as a bone, now done about 7k since the remap

A question to all you D5 drivers...

I've just been to look at an 05 facelifted car with the Euro3 engine with 55,000 miles on it. It drove very nicely but it's the first I've driven so don't know much about the engine characteristics.

It seemed to pull perfectly well through the rev range but unlike all the other diesel cars I've ever driven it had no noticeable 'surge' once it gets on the turbo, instead it was a very linear power delivery throughout the range all the way to the red line, much like an n/a petrol. Is this normal for this engine?
Seems about right, a bit flat below 1500 rpm, then pulls like a train to the redline. Makes it all too easy to use all the revs rather than short shift. Sounds nice for a diesel too.
yep

they Don't drive like other diesels at all...it really is a fantastic engine

Thanks for the input chaps. Well, job done! A 2005 facelifted euro 3 will be on my drive on Wednesday! smile The engine sounds great, better than most 4 pot petrols, but it was the seats that sold it to me! Comfy!

I have just bought my 2004 163bhp S60 D5 geartronic with only 44,500 miles on the clock. This car has pretty much every extra i can imagine and i am so impressed with the way its put together. Built to last thats for sure. I can't vouch for fuel economy as yet but seem to be getting around 50mpg so far. This is my first Volvo having traded in an Audi A4. Well impressed!
aye, Volvo are a cut above Audi in every respect cloud9

Doh! I never did my first year of ownership report...a couple of weeks late but hey ho

I have done 9k in her this year, she has been faultless apart from clutch slave cylinder going pop, 6.5hr job to fix..while in there they fitted New Clutch kit and Dual Mass Flywheel too smile the flywheel had loads of play in it (Compared to the brand new Volvo one) and although there were no signs of this when driving it was prudent to fit a new one.

Local trusted Independent did the work all Genuine Volvo parts used.

Great news!

Mine is on 179k miles now, should hit 180k later this month and is still going strong. Brilliant car.

Average economy seems to have settled around 46-47mpg. I know if I could be more gentle with it I could get around 50, but it's quite hard to resist hoofing it around a lot of the time. Somewhat different to the trip computer's 'estimate' of 60mpg. hehe
I got round too working mine out properly too, the display (on mine) reads 4-5mpg high over the "real" average for a full tank.

I generally get between 600 and 900 miles per tank (depending on the Hoofing effect)
I best I've had is 1000miles from a tank nerd

Well, I went from a 54 plate Audi A4 diesel to an 05 S60 D5 - so pretty much direct competitors from the same vintage.

There were very few areas where the Audi was better, the interior felt a bit more solid and the steering and handling was a bit more responsive (but still rubbish compared to the MG ZT I had before that) but the S60 equals or betters the A4 in pretty much every other area. Especially comfort!
yes

Glad to see she's still going strong, don't remember which forum but I remember when you bought this car, just before I got mine - it was your thread that swung me (may have been T5D5)
thanks
how is yours going? all good?

I have had to put a clutch on her fairly recently (slave cylinder went pop) see a few posts back.
but still very much enjoying her cloud9

Well I can report in after covering near on 15k in the space of 8 months.

The car had 115k when I got it and is now at 119k, sadly the dreaded clutch and DMF problem is rearing its ugly head.

When I got the car I changed the front suspension arms and bar a small weld on the exaust thats all its had.

Its averaged an amazing 48mpg and 50 wasnt hard to get and never let me down at all. Unfortunately it needs handbrake attention, new front and rear discs for the MOT, tyres and a clutch/DMF in the immediate future.

For that reason she is getting put on ebay and im busy trying to secure an E39 530 as its replacement.

I really rate these cars but do be careful to make sure some of the above has been carried out recently if your in the market for a high mileage example - or you will end up paying out more than its worth to keep it on the road.

On the plus side its been fantastic - hasnt missed a beat and its ultra comfy on the longer runs. I have to say even for being the basic version, the stereo is night on perfect.

I may regret a departure from Volvo (this was my 4th) but looking forward to a change.
frown

I wouldn't consider the brake discs, handbrake shoes, Clutch and DMF jobs to be big enough to write the car off!! yikes

I've done all of the above on my car, brake discs/pads and shoes not long after buying her....Full Clutch kit and DMF were done in July/Aug (about 3k ago)

(as reported a couple of pages back)

great car
The brake bits are cheap and very easy DIY jobs, the Clutch and DMF are 6.5hrs plus parts.
Who are you getting repair quotes from?

STILL thinking about one of these!

I now have a contract extension on my current job, which is 45-50 miles from home, so over the year I shall be putting about 25k with my casual useage as well.

I have a v cheap snotter at the mo, but it is not particularly economical and very uncomfortable, with poor lights an no a/c. It has been fine for a few months of thrashing around various construction sites, but now I'm going to be more office based a comfortable motorway mile muncher is in order.

I have posted on this thread before whilst considering an S60, then strayed off onto thinking about alternatives. However, I keep coming back to these - maybe I just need to scratch that S60 itch!

My budget now is £3.5k max. The thing is I've never bought a car with over 100k on the clock and an S60 D5 SE on my budget is likely to be. Given the annual mileage I'll be doing it rise a quite a rate. The depreciation on a car of this value doesn't worry me too much, but the list of things which may need doing/repalcing/etc (maintenance costs) does.

In my situation would you still recommend one of these cars, or would I be better in an old Golf/Passat 130 TDi?
I'd say if you can find one that has had the clutch, Slave Cyl and DMF replaced (this goes for all the Volvos of this age) then yes go for it...if not keep that in mind as it is a common failure and costs between £1k and £1.5 depending who does the work.

maintenance costs are not high imho, it is all relative, I'd say you'll spend the same in maintenance on a VAG or BMW/Mercedes as you would on a Volvo.....if you want cheap buy a modern Ford or Vauxhall.

Would I buy another one Knowing what I know now? ......YES I would yes
