Looks like a lovely example!
Not sure about a vibration through the drivers seat - is it very subtle? I can't say I've ever noticed anything like that but the D5 isn't the smoothest diesel around...
Mine doesn't vibrate through the seat on idle, or not to any degree that I've noticed it if it does. Not sure about a vibration through the drivers seat - is it very subtle? I can't say I've ever noticed anything like that but the D5 isn't the smoothest diesel around...

Wonder if it could be an engine mount...
Good thinking, it probably is that tbh! the top-mounts are prone to wear.Tim, if the rubber one is shot slap one of these on it instead

It's not so bad that the whole car is shaking and the dash is rattling, but you can definately feel it without looking for it so to speak.y2blade said:

Is that a 6 speed box?
No it's a 5 speed. Didn't like the look of the "spaceball" to begin with, but it is growing on me!It looks like a nice motor and pretty much the top spec you could wish to find, and with the right engine
The OY numberplate is common on Volvo of this age, mines a 2001 and is an OY. It means it was originally registered in Oxford and I think Volvo UK HQ was, maybe still is in Didcot. Mines an S spec but is more or less specced upto an SE other than climate control and fog lights. Just keep an eye out for other Volvos with the OY prefix they're very common!

Well done sir - thats a cracking example!
Sadly my alternator started to dissolve this weekend so I was forced to buy a car quickly. There were signs all was not well with the turbo too as I started to get chatter and induction sounds with some nasty mettalic noises at times.
To keep things simple I did a straight deal on the new car and took the Volvo to WBAC - must say I am not sure how they are going to get what they paid me for it back, but no complaining!
Knocking money off for the towbar was mildly amusing.
Onto BMW ownership as of tomorrow morning - I hope I dont regret this departure!

Mine's just breezed through it's MOT, despite being nearly 10 years old and 169k on the clock. MOT tester commented on how good it was underneath. Emissions are well inside even the latest standard, at 0.32 thingies (limit 3.5).
It still likes a bit of a drink, but I had a long, fast drive (120 miles each way) along Welsh single carriageways at the weekend, it's incredible just how surefooted it is for such a behemoth, it makes sticking near to the speed limit somewhat tricky. With the tyres nicely warm, it never once felt like it was close to the limit, I reckon it's comfortable at a good 10-20 mph quicker through the corners than the Passat I had previously, which sounds reckless, but in reality was utterly drama free. The only snag was catching the occasional ditherer, I don't do risky overtakes any more, only ones where I can see for three or more times the distance it takes to get past. Still, the slowpokes were dispatched with ease once the road opened up.
I reckon average fuel economy on that trip was down to the low 30's..... I shall find out tomorrow when I fill up.

Hi all, i've just had a quote of £420 from my local independant garage for full service & timing belt change (2003 S60 D5) - is this about right or a bit steep?
Doesn't sound steep at all to me, I'd be happy with that for a just major service plus a few minor bits and bobs.JG1971 said:
Thanks for the replies.
MY D5 also has a slight knocking from the rear end when going over small bumps in the road - what is this likely to be and is it an expensive fix?
I'm pretty sure That will be the rear drop-links, these cars go through them like no-ones business.MY D5 also has a slight knocking from the rear end when going over small bumps in the road - what is this likely to be and is it an expensive fix?
Less than a hour to replace and easy to DIY if you are that way inclined.

I've been using the ones from PFV and they are not very robust, starting to knock again after about 5k...
...I'm getting my next pair from these guys http://www.allgermanparts.co.uk/ourshop/cat_320731...
they are held in good regard on the Volvo forums
