Hi Guys

Family wasn't able to afford Technic Lego when I was a boy, so I'm keen to get building a kit with my son next week - half term lockdown!

However, just don't know where to start choosing a kit. I would obviously like a high number of pieces, but what about the motors and lights. Any kits come with these, or do you modify the kits to add a motor etc? Porsche GT3 or Lamborghini kits look awesome.

Any quick thoughts/help appreciated.

Cheers

How old is your son? My 5 year old helped with the easier parts of the Lamborghini, but found a lot of it too difficult. A smaller set might be easier such as Corvette.

My nephew is a similar age and really enjoyed building the Defender.

Depends on what you want out of the set, if you can find one for sensible money then i'd go for the 42070 6x6 all terrain tow truck or the 42030 Volvo front loader, both are full remote control and great builds, just build, add batteries and have fun, the GT3, RSR, Sion, Chiron and the like will all need modifying to accept motors, solenoids and controllers!!

Some Lego you tubers are flagging Chiron is to be discontinued end of this year.

Also has anyone bought the huge Harry Potter Castle nearly 7,000 pieces. 16 hour expert builder minimum build time.

I got the Hogwarts Castle a couple of years ago for a family build over Christmas. Very good overall. Lots of small pieces but plenty of interest in building especially for book / film fans.

Is the Chiron worth the build?

I have the Defender and RSR but as per previous comments I've often found the Creators builds to be more interesting/pleasing. The Chiron seems like one I should have but it's a chunk of change to spend on something I'm not sure about...

I wouldn't be buying anything until Black Friday deals are out, always some discounts on the Technic cars.

I'm hoping that Amazon has a <£200 Liebherr.

Good, the Chiron is possibly the most boring build I have done

I got the hogwarts castle on release, it’s nice but is a little fragile as it’s built in 2 halves that rest together. It’s a shame that it’s not big enough for full size minifigs.

I prefer the Disney castle personally.

Agreed. It's just a massive gearbox that you never get to see working, as most of it is already covered up by subsequent layers of components before you've built enough to understand what it does. It's very clever and the designers must have been very pleased with themselves for making it work, but it's no fun to build and there's no play value with the finished model.

Excellent, that's helped me save £250.

Not sure what else you were expecting? The big cars are 99% gearbox and pretty much always have been.
IMO The Bugatti is the best looking of the recent 3 (and 911 and Sian)

The modern Technic cars are neither decent representations of how the real things look, nor any use for appreciating mechanical detail.

I'd expect that the first and last few pages of the instructions are interesting enough, but all the stuff inbetween is just the usual moronic part finding and pushing together exercises.

At the end of it you're £200+ lighter, but what did you end up with? Nothing unique, not particularly nice to look at, and you can't 'play' with them either.

I read that it is built in the same way the actual car is put together. Guess if you own a real one, pray the gearbox doesn't have a fault smile

I guess it's a bit like some video games I play, there is a fine balance between realism and fun.

I'm tempted by the Landrover but I do like Italian sports cars. Yesterday the 1989 Batmobile added itself to the decision process.

I have, so far, resisted both the Chiron & the Sian.

If the Chiron is to be retired at the end of the year I might just buy it rather than watch the price go up on fleabay & regret not buying it now.

The Sian is more appealing however I have seen a fair few which have differing shades of green so that puts me off a little.

However a Sian is currently sitting in my Amazon basket so should I or shouldn’t I?

Recently built the 911 RSR which is a good build & the Defender. Which is great apart from the fact that despite four rebuilds I still cannot get the four wheel drive system too work!!!!

Annoying me a tad however as my Lego sits on a shelf it’s not the end of the world.
