It’s a common misconception that the modern sets have unique pieces and it’s a bit of a shame because it undersells the talent involved in designing the kits.
It's also become a bit of a self-perpetuating thing. People who haven't played with Lego for decades will happily tell each other on the internet that it's all custom bits now.

Some of the 1:8th MOC car are very creative with standard parts, the C63 I recently built was much more enjoyable than the Porsche kit

It would be great if Lego had included a homage to 8860 for their 90 year anniversary, like they did with the spaceship and castle. It has to be one of their most iconic sets, and one which pretty much every Lego fan of a certain age owned.
They did one for the 40th anniversary of technic https://brickset.com/article/27565/technic-40-year...

Eta I need to keep up at the back

Finished the Raptor tonight. Nice enough build, interesting rear suspension design too. I have the McLaren and Defender to build as well but it'll likely be a few weeks until I get round to them.

Treated myself to the Airbus last week. Not sure when I’m going to build it as still got the 911 and McLaren to do.

That's great, please can you share a link of where you got the mounts from?

I debated on these mounts instead of my acrylic boxes (and the price wasn't too dissimilar) - but decided to just hang mine on the wall using traditional picture mounts with some string through the key chassis rails

Ouch, yep, I'll stick with the picture mount method too!

That's the place. If I were to start again I'd probably just get something similar from Amazon or Etsy (afterall it is just a piece of acrylic), but there were no other options available and I want to keep the set looking the same so stump up the cost. For transparency, the mount was 110EUR and shipping was 65EUR (!!!).

Yep. That was it. I considered making a cheaper version for a while, but decided there probably wasn’t a huge market

Some (I think) decent offers at Zavvi - more System than Technic, but the SP3 at £260 for example.

Got the Delorean for Christmas. Looks cool but build wasn't as good as the Ecto-1 I got the year before. Once you've done the wheel retraction mechanism it's a bit repetitive. The interior isn't that well detailed and it needs a stand to display it in "flight" mode. Inclusion of the Marty and Doc Brown minifigs was a nice touch though.

You're welcome!

Costco have the Airbus for £120. That's tempting me.
