Anyone got any YouTube links for an introduction to all the factions for 10th edition, e.g. a little bit of background but mainly models and how they play?
Arbitor Ian does a lot good lore stuff.

Beyond that reading Lexicanum is probably your best bet because a lot of the content is very, erm, american

How did I not know about this thread! Fell off the wagon about 5 years ago after not painting a model for 20 years:

Orks, neurons, chaos knights, death guard & dark angels currently.

I'm not sure how they typically all play in the current edition honestly as I haven't played for years (plus I play Orks, so the 'meta' is irrelevant as it's all just for fun laugh) But I can kinda summarise they different factions if you're completely new to the hobby..

Imperium:
Space bureaucrats on a permanent holy crusade to cleanse the galaxy of anything that isn't their master race. Armoured suits, bigger armoured suits, and then some huge armoured suits. Massive amount of units and types, and some very cool chapters / sub-factions. You can't really go wrong as there's so much variety..

Chaos:
As above but like, the dark side version. If the Imperium is Christian Rock then Chaos is death metal. Broadly formed of 4 unique factions each representing a different Chaos good. And demons.

Eldar:
Space emos. Fragile, complicated, misunderstood. I remember these were always a tough one to play well with - very specialised units and strategies, not very forgiving.

Dark Eldar:
As above but after discovering BDSM. IIRC they play largely the same way. I think they look great but I'd rather collect them than battle with them.

Tau:
Space communists. These were always high in the meta, some devastating units and long-range weapons.

Orks:
Football hooligans in space. Think Mad Max with cockney accents. IMO the most fun faction, proper rag-tag 'just for fun' army that can actually upset some of the others in competition, if played properly and if they don't blow themselves up due a bad dice roll. Best army if you just enjoy the modelling and DIY side of the hobby IMO.

Tyranids:
Space bugs, power in numbers, swarm army. Think the xenomorph from Alien but you have to paint 500 of them.

Necrons:
Like the Terminator but with a sort of ancient Egyptian theme. Slept for a million years then woke up cranky and want to kill everyone. Tough units IIRC and generally quite competitive.

I already know without clicking the link it’s going to be Auspex Tactics. laugh

Good for cutting through big codexes and finding good combos, not sure all of his theorising makes it way onto the table top though.

My 13 yr old son has just started to get into Warhammer, I guess I was about the same age when I started collecting figs and painting for D&D!

Shout out to the Warhammer shop in Reading, what a helpful bunch! Ultimate starter and a set of paints later and he's got going. Expect I'll be sucked back in too, though I know nothing about 40k as all my gaming was D&D role-play.

Also realised how much my old (kept) metal Citadel/GW figs are now worth :-o !! Have been in a cupboard for last 40 years eek

If you can find copies it might be worth trying to find a Cursed City or Blackstone Fortress as they bridge the gap between D&D style role playing and Warhammer nicely.

I've just jumped back in to painting after a 25 year break. Still deciding on 30k vs 40k at the moment. Also rescued a load of my old lead miniatures from my parent's house.

I'm currently jumping back in too laugh maybe it's the onset of cold and miserable weather that has me picking up an indoors hobby again laugh

I've been in and out for over 2 decades to be honest but I've still got Orks unbuilt / unpainted so I'm readying up to dive back in properly. Familiarised myself with the 10th edition rules (which are forgivingly simple to be fair) and bought the pack of Ork index cards from a store last week.

Currently binging Duncan Rhode's painting tutorials to get me back in the mood to tackle my awaiting horde.

I@m yet to look into 10th but I've heard very good things, apparently the weapon profiles are a lot easier to memorise now as well!

Love Duncan Rhode's videos, 2 thin coats!!

I don't know if I love Youtube videos. I only started last month, I already have 45 different Citadel paints and I'm looking at all sorts of things to create simple but "interesting" bases... Youtube is a fantastic resource but it does move the goalposts somewhat, if you're easily influenced like I am hehe

Love was maybe a strong choice of wording haha but I do find them very very useful if not slightly daunting when his results looks so effortless compared to my poor excuse for painting!

I know this is '40k', but there isn't another thread for Fantasy/AoS. Is anyone planning on jumping into The Old World when it gets released? Pre-order is 6th Jan for the Bretonnia and Tomb Kings boxes, and the prices have leaked.

Bretonnia - £155
Tomb Kings - £175

I still have a load of 4th edition WFB Orcs and Goblins metal models, so will be adding to those and likely just pick up the core rules and ravening hordes books. Wyvern (Azhag the Slaughterer), doom diver, squig hoppers, fanatics, night goblin shamans, savage orc boars and night goblin spider riders etc. A good chunk I never painted, so will need to get to it but I recently managed to revive my old Goblin Green paint so I can even be period specific..ha!

I never got into Age of Sigmar, but this has me (mildly) excited as I really enjoyed Fantasy when I played, more so than 40k. I think it was more lore on 40k and play on Fantasy for me.

Also there is going to be another Hatchette Partworks magazine run for 10th edition 40k, just a trial run for now apparently called Combat Patrol. That will go up for pre-order/subscription soon.

I haven't had chance to look into it at all yet - is it going back to 'regiments' and that style of play? I had a few boxes of Lizardmen back in the early 2000's when it was still Warhammer Fantasy...

Still really want to start a Skaven army though but I need to get my painting desk set back up and finish my Orks first biggrin

Yes, it will be quite close to 6th & 8th edition Fantasy, I think. Square bases (although size has increased), movement trays etc are all coming back.

Lizardmen and Skaven will not be core armies, but they will get free PDF releases - https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/05/23/old... That may change depending on the popularity of course in time.

I used to have a large Undead force from 4th edition Fantasy as well (Nagash, Kemmler etc) and the split Tomb Kings/Vampire Counts don't do much for me.

This goes over the full release for next Saturday - https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/12/31/sun...

My sons have recently rekindled my childhood hobby of D&D and mini painting (40 years ago!) and am now completely immersed in 40k!

This is the first mini I’ve painted in that time, Tyranid Psycophage. Whilst things have changed alot (contrast/speedpaint etc) establishes techniques are thankfully the same! What is amazing is the detail on today’s models!? I still have a hoarde of Citadel metal minifigs, but they look like they’re modelled in clay by comparison. Today’s detail is another level to paint!

Anyway, here it is. The carapace has a green iridescent glaze which doesn’t really show in the photos, but am happy with the results.

Considering edge highlighting it, but wanted an organic feel, befitting of the species, rather than Citadel ‘Eavy Metal’. Feel free to critique! Want to improve my skills.

Looks good! I have a psychophage ready to paint, I'll want to make it look "organic" as much as I can too.

Lots of space marines to finish first though, so I have enough to play with!

So after a couple of Space Marines I’ve tried something a bit more adventurous. 3 models in and I went for the Christmas Red Gobbo.

Pretty pleased with it, but still a lot to learn.
