I've really been enjoying working on some of the Kill Team scenery packs (Kill Zones) recently the amount of detail on the pieces is brilliant and all the kits are very cleverly interchangeable. Here's some of my work, but I've done a bit more since...

If any PHer is looking from some Citadel paints, I have a couple sets of the following that I'm happy to send for the cost of postage (say £2).

- Macragge Blue
- Abaddon Black
- Retributor armour (gold)
Looking for some original Mithryl Silver for brush painting. I was told last week that Cote d’Arms was the same stuff - it absolutely isn’t. I wish I’d kept my money...

Why specifcally original mithryl silver? Isn't there a modern equivalent in the GW range?

On the matter of what to buy to get most bang-per-buck, the same subject came up on the Modelmaking Guru's Sunday livestream. The consensus was the Land Speeder Storm at £18:50. 99 parts, including 6 space marines.

A notch or two above that are the £50 "Start Collecting!" sets. Browsing through, these look tempting:

I've had the newer stuff (Citadel?), and it was different; more grainy and doesn't cover as well. I think the original was in a hexaganol clear plastic bottle. Decent silvers for brushing are hard to find.

Dr gr - have you tried the vallejo model air/game air ranges?

Really, really nice to use with a regular brush - flow really well, and good coverage. Very fine grain, and a wide range of silver tones.

I absolutely love them.

I've used thinned Vallejo Model Colour for airbrushing, and it was great, but then I discovered that Model Air silvers were finer grained, so use them. I recently got some Metal Colour, which is also good. I thought Model Air would be too thin for brushing, but I might give it a go, maybe with some retarder mixed in. Thanks.

It's perhaps a little thin for large areas - but then, with access to an airbrush there's no need!

I use it straight out of the dropper bottle, with nothing mixed in.

For me, it's just perfect consistency and drying rate for brush painting details (for example, blades and chain mail on a 40k mini). Really nice to edge highlight with too - doesn't 'flood' off the brush, but does flow cleanly onto the edge from the side of the brush.

I wanted to build a few models without the airbrush (going to set myself a 48 hour challenge - no airbrush, no aftermarket, old kit Airfix or Matchbox), hence the need for decent quality brushing paint. Model colour is fine for most things, but silvers are tricky (and flourescents).

Sounds like a challenge!

In that case, I think I'd still use the vma silvers, little bit of flow improver/retarder, and 2/3 thin coats to build up the opacity and coverage.

Good luck!

Don't do it!!

'nids are bloody awesome - the opportunity for starship troopers quotes during a game is endless - however they're a proper horde army...

After painting your 150th diddy little termagaunt, the appeal wanes rapidly!

Too late! My finger slipped at lunch!

Thankfully, its only that box and a cheap box of 5 Termagants, I only really bought it for the big monster at the back. its 97 pieces alone!

My brain just saw a colour way that could work, and the Genesteelers look similar to the dark forest monsters in the 2nd Tomb Raider film. See where my brains heading?

Oh and I love the first Starship troopers film!

And you can't even get metal figurines any more?

Shame really...i was considering getting back into it but walked straight back out.

hehe

There's some amazing big monster tyranids... With awesome story/fluff too.

Prices aren't cheap (although you're guaranteed 20% from any online retailer) - and no, they're not white metal anymore. However, the quality is so much better than the metal (or finecast) days, and it isn't called 'plastic crack' for nothing!

Kill Team (Sci FI) or Shadespire (fantasy) are the gateway games. Really very cheap to get into and have some great games...

Anyone play Eldar here?

What models/boxes/bundles should I be looking to buy to get started?

Any recommendations for where to buy high-standard pre-painted units, other than ebay?

Used to - a looong time ago!

Daughter is exploring her vicious side by starting Dark Eldar. Human skin cloaks for the win!

They're really, really, solid as an army. Pretty much none of the units available are poor in game (or overcosted in points, which isn't the case for pretty much any other army).

Number of ways you can go - I'd suggest getting the codex and seeing what 'theme' you prefer, then going from there.

As for high quality pre painted - either ebay as you've said, or find a commission painter (loads around - don't look at the prices Siege Studios charge!) online, any decent one will buy/build/paint an army to your exact spec.

It will not be cheap, even Abromovich might wince at the costs for a varied 2k points army...

They look great!

If you haven't seen it, the next issue of Conquest magazine is out today and includes 3x easy fit plague marines, a pot of death guard green, 6 (cheap) dice and a half decent mini play mat (in thick paper) for £4.99.

Not a bad deal overall if you want the minis.

Indeed.

It's even better when you consider the blight launcher weapon included on the sprue - they're the current killer weapon for plague marines, and bloody hard/expensive to get hold of...
