Drukhari skin is a nightmare - aiming for very pale, but with some depth...

Try a very, very thinned wash of drukhari violet on the face and arms. Brings out the contours, and adds an unhealthy pallor to the very pale (vampiric) skin.

Just seen your email, I'll drop you a reply in a bit.

Erm, she's missing an arm? wink

Looking good so far though, which washes have you used, might be the photo, but it looks to me like you could go stronger on the washes?
haha, It crosses the body so this is easier.

Flesh is Rakarth flesh with Reikland shade (visible on the arm) the face is just base as I wasn't happy with the hairline and repainted it.

Hair is Khorne red with Carroburg wash.

Bronze is Army Painter with Nuln oil (hindsight says its a bit bright).

Black is the old faithful Abaddon black.

Everything else is waiting for a layer of the final colour.

I'd suggest a wash with druchii violet, thinned quite a bit with water. Then Pallid Wych Flesh as a highlight, hitting the brow, nose, cheeks, biceps, etc.

Hair is Khorne red with Carroburg wash. Looks good - a simple dry brush with a deep orange, lightly, will really bring it out along it's length.

Bronze is Army Painter with Nuln oil (hindsight says its a bit bright). I don't personally think it's too bright. You could thin some carroberg crimson with lahmian medium and glaze it over - turn it into a rich coppery tone.

Black is the old faithful Abaddon black.

Everything else is waiting for a layer of the final colour.
Looking really good chap. Taking close ups with flash always shows every single 'blemish'.

I saw a pic recently by a professional mini painter of a space marine. It was a work of absolute art. Just stunning.

He provided photos showing the 40 odd "defects" he saw everytime he looked at the model...

Thanks Sway.. methiston red was planned for the hair highlights, but I’ve also got a scarlet here just in case. Also have pallid wych flesh to highlight as well, just haven’t got round to it when I took this photo.

A weak purple as a wash could be good, I’ll try that on a piece of sprue before trying it on a model.

Also have an 80’s inspired idea for a couple, think Toyah and the like!

Well, I've not had much time to paint over the past month at all, but I have had time to shop on eBay! I've managed to pull together quite a reasonable force of Ultramarines, all painted to a decent table stop standard (mostly by other people!).

If get some time to finish the models I am painting, I'll try to get some pictures up over the weekend. thumbup

Oh, and on the magazine front - it seems that Hachette has stopped sending to all but the biggest outlets starting this week (Issue 23, battlefield scenery).

So anyone looking to get an ETB Redemptor or Repulsor on the cheap is likely to miss out.

Nice (well, as nice as anyone collecting ultrasmurfs can be!) - remind me, have you got Guilleman yet?

They've just got a really nice buff in the competitive meta, with the bolter drill beta rule.

Largest tournament in the world kicks off today, I'd expect to see an Ultramarine based (plus knights and probably Guard) in the top 3.

  • for those that don't know why Ultramarines are generally disliked by older players, prior to an utter muppet that frankly nearly killed GW, they were 'just another chapter, in a different colour'. They then became apparently the chapter that everyone else wished they could be, with the most broken rules going. Plus, the model releases have massively favoured them.
For a laugh, read the article on Matt Ward on 1d4chan...

Have Guilleman all painted up very nicely (not by me) and I also have Calgar and his boyfriends waiting to be painted - wanted to get a bit of practice in before painting him.

Here is a teaser of the army as it currently stands (not including unpainted models), will y to get some better pics over the weekend:

Back in my day (2nd edition) ultramarines were one of the weaker chapters. You basicly had the blood angels a bunch of psyco vampires with specialist asssault troops, the dark angels who everyone suspect did something wrong during heresy and the space wolves. Well the beardieness of these armies was beyond beardie. Ultramarines were pretty basic and the standard codex to use for your own custom army. They did have one beardy rule. your sergeant in a 5 man tactical marine squad could have terminator armour.... lol

Went with Ultramarines this time around for a few reasons :

I really like the Primaris models (except the vehicles), but their lore and models don't really work with my existing Space Wolves army.

Ultramarines are clearly GW's favoured chapter, so will get all the toys first.

I got burnt out painting all the detail on the Space Wolves troops.

The Marneus Calgar model is awesome.

Oh there's loads going for Ultras. They're bloody nice sculpts, with lots of simple but really appealing iconography, and the range is massive. They look awesome when painted up too.

Rules are nice too.

For those who remember, Matt Ward really did make it very easy to be put off them though!

To be fair, he did stupid things with every codex he was involved in. The company really took a turn once he was out of the picture. I don't think there's been an edition as evenly balanced as the current 8th - acknowledging there are still issues. Chaos Space Marines may well be fixed in a month when the Black Legion dex is released, and we can hope that grey knights get some simple tweaks soon.

Oh, and if you can, it's worth checking out some of the live streamed LVO games - really shows how ruthlessly optimising lists for efficiency and ability to cause harm completely changes the game.

so is that just the WH Smith's and Asda of this world from now then?

local Smith's gets 3 of each issue and had this week's #23.

so hopefully it will continue to get it in. it got the star trek starship for over 140 issues!

I also saw that image of the figure showing all the "defects" as a commission painter and competition painter that image is all too accurate!

I’d just like to go on record and say...... I hate painting censored faces.

Sway, your tip on the violet wash worked great, until I buggered the rest of the paint!

Thought it had only been WH Smiths and Asda for a while? The local WH Smiths (for a town of around 200,000) had stocked a couple copies each week but stopped last week, as did many other per several of the YouTube reviewers who struggled to get it from their local.

The WH Smiths at the regional shopping mall had 3 or 4 copies though.

Still, not sure what I'm going to do about my remaining subscription as I want some of the scenery (Haemotrope reactors, magnavent) and the Primaris captain. For all of the other models and paints, I'm not that bothered.

Think I may get the next one with the Redemptor and then can it, although the one after that does have a Rhino (chaos) in it.

Luckily I missed out on all that drama, only really got back into it a year or so ago.

Not really sure I like the way the Lore is going, to be honest, It is overly Ultramarines centric, with Guilleman essentially being the Emperor incarnate. Not sure I could see Space Wolves and other more renegade chapters just falling in line behind him as their commander.

I'll pop my head into the local Smith's early doors on Wednesday to see if part 1 of dreadnaught is in. if not no big drama.

I'm only looking for the dread, primaris captain set, DG mortar tank, apothecary and repulsor tank. but the saving on the vehicles isn't massive.

I agree, especially with the redemptor - it doesn't even have the best war gear included, so if you're looking to use it in a game, its value is reduced anyway.

Bugger, just had my genius strategy for my Ultramarines army ruined by my own failure to read the rules.

My idea was that I'd take this, fully tooled up for anti-vehicle:

Stick these inside it:

STick this on the back of it (possibly swapping out the assault cannon for a multimelta:

Then stick a lieutenant with a power fist and an apothecary in normal tac armour in there with the termis, fly it 40" straight up the board turn 1 at the enemies biggest threat, drop the passengers next to it in turn 2 and annihilate the target in close combat with reroll misses in close combat (Chaplain Dread) and reroll wounds (lieutenant).

Unfortunately, unlike every other Chaplain in the game, on closer inspection the Chaplain Dread doesn't allow you to reroll 1s in close combat, he adds +1 strength to all units within 6" in CC. So, not a hugely useful buff when the hammers are already S8. frown

May have to drop the apothecary for a captain with powerfist and a plasma pistol. Will be a very expensive unit, but should be hard as nails and very mobile (at least until the Storm Raven is shot off the board)!
