Finally got shelves in my garage for the model car collection, nothing like what some of you guys have, but here they.

I've no idea what make they are (pretty sure it's nothing too Gucci), and for some reason I can't find my Countach which will be in the loft somewhere. Also not on display is my VX220, which has pride of place in another location.

Late to the party but secret santa delivered my very first scale model of any car..... a 1:18 scale model of the 2.7RS.

I think the 1:18 scale models is the route I'll embark on as i seek to collect other interesting ones.

Definitely. If I could go back and restart my collection I'd choose 1:43, 1:18 takes up a lot of room.

Any recommendations for 1/18 scale F1 cars. Classics/vintage as opposed to modern day?

Tecnomodel are good in 1/18 and reasonably priced.

I do like the size of the 1:18 scale. Not sure how small the 1:43 scale is compared and how that affects the details. However, i may look for
something in that size to compare with and i guess I'll see which works better to my liking. Cheers

Edit to add that i got gifted a 1:24 scale model. Did say i was new to this biggrin

Good size nonetheless and very happy with it so might follow up along that size.

Depends how far you want to go back and how much you want to spend. GP Replicas are producing a lot of different cars from various eras and some of those look great. Just don't order direct from GP Replicas, their customer service is reputedly awful.
Spark have done a few as well, I really like their models in general, though they do tend to sell out and become expensive from eBay etc.

Exoto made some nice opening cars, and you can still find some at a reasonable price. Schuco did a couple of nicely detailed Coopers that can be found at a very reasonable price. CMC have done some 1950s cars (and pre-war GP racers), very expensive though. A lot of the time it will probably depend on the car/driver that you want.

For 1980s-on (with a few earlier cars) Minichamps are also OK, I find they have some really good ones but others where the details are a bit mediocre.

The 2.7 RS is a great choice to begin a collection! smile Assume it's by Welly? I've got the green one in 1:18, believe I picked it up from CK-Modelcars for around £20, their sale items can be well worth checking out.

On the subject of Santa, I got the below as a lovely surprise Xmas present. biggrin 1:24 997 GT3 RS:

As this is supposed to be a 1:18 thread, here are a couple of mine, which recently came out from hibernation in the wardrobe. Neither are top quality, but still look decent in a display case.

Jag Mk II - a 1:18 squeezed into a 1:24 case (actually looks good!):

Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, complete with shell fuel pump. Think Shell sold these through their petrol stations about 25 years ago, it had never been out of the box before:

Our family moved home in Spring 2022 and prior to the move I had to box up all my 1:18 models that I had on display (I kept all the original boxes in my loft) - which took quite some time - and the plan was always going to be getting some of my collection back out of storage and on display in the new house.

The models - over 375 of them - sat in the garage at the new house for 8'ish months while we got on with other DIY and home furnishing projects - making our new house a home.

However, with some time off over the Christmas break, it was time to get my finger oot! A trip to Ikea resulted in a purchase of eight 'lack' shelves (which only just managed to fit into the wife's Puma for the trip back home) and local joiner was able to fit the shelves in to our spare bedroom/office earlier this week:

Before:

During the models being added:

After:

Being a bit of a Ford fan I decided to put 95% of my Ford model collection on display, the rest is mainly Porsche with a couple of other bits & pieces thrown in. 90 models in total on display in this room with one more (an Otto Ford Fiesta ST in blue) still to come next month (pre-ordered it).

I've got 10 other models on display elsewhere in the house and the remaining 286 models are still in storage.

Some closer shots:

I wanted to pick up a single 1/18 917K 1971 model and was going to buy one from the Porsche museum but didn’t fancy taking it back in hand luggage and at the time I thought it was expensive. I’ve subsequently ordered one from EU and thanks to brexit, it turned out to me just as dear. I have been eyeing a couple of other Porsche Le Mans winners and the prices on eBay are eye watering. I think I saw one at around £800!

Other than eBay, where are the best places to pick up hard to find models?

Yea, it’s made by Sun Star, they do quite a lot of older UK Fords but this one is a little disappointing. The colour is more cream than white.
