Just ordered this one for poos and giggles - I'll let you know what its like. Figured I'd learn with this and then get a Go Pro'able one after I've crashed it... a lot.

The gadget show 2 weeks ago did an episode with a choice of 3/4 drones on it that were camera enabled.
The outcome is very interesting. And all I'll say is I have no purpose for a drone but I now need a drone and there's only one manufacturer that I'll buy... I'll let you guess which manufacturer.

The Phantom really is the only sensible option. The whole DJI setup does work very well. I have a Phantom Version 1.1.1 (no longer readily available) which was the most cost effective option for me at the time. However it's a slippery slope, you'll soon get frustrated with the jerky footage, and you may well suffer from the 'jello' effect where the vibration from the aircraft alters your GoPro footage. In which case you'll want a Gimbal which is a whole lot more cash. Then you'll want a real time data down link to view your footage, then spare batteries, etc, etc.....
The result really is fantastic though. So much so that I've started a business out of it and I'm currently going through CAA certification process. Oh, and I've ended up with a £10k Drone (RPAS (Remotely Piloted Air System) to give them their current official title) to do so!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE familiarise yourself with the current legal status regarding RPAS flights before committing yourself to one. Yes, the rules apply to everyone, regardless of aircraft size, and weather you're flying for fun or profit, and the CAA are actively pursuing offenders now (think £5k fine!).
The rules are governed by the Air Navigation Order, and it is therefore Law.
Basically the things you need to consider for any RPAS up to 7kgs are, not to fly:
over or within 150m of any congested area.
over or within 150m of an organised open air gathering of 1000 people or more.
over or within 50m of any person, structure, vehicle or vessel not under your control.
Public liability insurance is highly recommended, and you MUST have a CAA Permit to operate (a £2k commitment) if you want to do any sort of paid work.

I have the version without the lcd controller and it is brilliant, you can fly it indoors or outdoors (wind dependant). The camera is decent enough and as a learning point its perfect!

But I would be within 50 metres of other houses, my neighbours, pedestrians and passing vehicles. Your list says no.
As its PH one assumed you live in a stately home and you just ask the butler to inform the ground staff of your intentions. But your right you wouldn't be able to do that.
One I was very concerned of was at Bournemouth airfest a parrot drone was being operated up to a good height although not on the display line but along the promenade also above 1,000's of spectators it just looked like an accident waiting to happen and it's for reasons like that the CAA are wanting to crackdown.
However trying to enforce it is another matter and would require someone else who knew the rules to report it.

One does, but one did not wish to have the PH plebs frothing with outraged jealousy...So, we can only use these things outside built up areas, then? Not much point in having one.

Thats more like it. I will get a proper look later on - like something to tinker with. Much more potential than a moulded plastic cheaper model....pretty sure this will lift a go-pro. buy a cheap tx/rx from ebay and off you go.
Thanks for the link by Noel above.
I've been close to pulling the trigger on a DJI Phantom Vision + for weeks, but at a grand it's a hell of a lot of money.
HobbyKing has a few which seem to offer a lot of the DJI features, but at a lot lower cost.
This one looks very interesting for me:

Good job I don't have a lot on today, I can foresee most of today spent on the HobbyKing website
