Now that I've assembled a decent collection of RC cars to cover most bases, I'm keen to finish off the fleet with a brushless truck/buggy/truggy that is capable of some proper speed (and a nitro car but that's another thread!).

I like the idea of something that can do wheelies on demand, has a seriously quick top speed and can take a few lumps and jumps. I was originally thinking I'd be in Traxxas E-Maxx money, but the HPI E-Firestorm Flux has caught my eye. £250, RTR, 77mph top speed, water resistant electrics and only needs a battery to get up and running! What am I missing? The competition seems to be in the order of several hundred pounds more?!? My understanding was HPI was a good make with plenty of parts availability and backup. Seems rude not to, or am I missing something? Maybe even a suitable alternative? Confused.

I had the flux for a couple of years - a cracking little car. Fit some TBR racing bumpers (T-bones) and it will take some serious abuse. Spares are cheap and easily available, as are hop-ups if you are so inclined (I put alloy carriers and steering arms on mine as they seemed to be the only bits prone to break). Waterproofing worked well, never had any problems with puddles, rain or snow.

It's fast, will wheelie on demand on 3S batteries (can't remember if it does on 2S). Only two wheel drive, but that makes it more challenging to control and therefore more rewarding in the long run. It will jump, but it's not something I ever spent much time on.

The speed controllers can be a bit naff at times - mine went after a couple of months but was replaced without issue under warranty. It was fine after that

In the end I only sold mine as the place I was running it was too bumpy / challenging for it to get any speed without flipping over (an old quarry).

I'm not sure about the competition these days - haven't looked for a while. But when I bought mine I was comparing it to the Hobao hyper TT Electric (an awesome car which I subsequently bought, but its out of production now) and also to cars like the HPI bullet flux and the FTX carnage, both of which were 4wd and didn't seem to come up as well in the reviews.

I have been running a Traxxas Slash 4x4 and it makes a great 'bashing' truck, robust and fast out of the box. Wang a 3s LiPo in it and its stupidly fast.

In three years I have replaced only knackered bodies from roll overs and the main prop shaft bearing, not that expensive when they do go but I fitted a KingHeadz motor mount which allows a more substantial bearing to be used - so far so good. The rest of the truck is bone stock and will continue to be so smile
