How many of any given model to Scalextric normally produce or sell?

I have a couple of specials which are meant to be rare. It gets me thinking is 1,000 that "limited" in what is a fairly niche hobby? See similar things in diecast where you wonder how many they'd actually sell anyway.

I honestly think being a limited model sells better than the regular version to begin with. Sometimes the rare models are the regular versions that sold poorly or modified unique cars

RobXJ, that's a nice collection of quite rare cars you have there. The cardboard boxes all look to be in superb condition to.

A few more limited edition box sets. A run of 3000 for the 6R4 and RS 200.

Rusty Rides VW box set of 2000.

Not sure whether this would be classed as rare or just an oddity. Factory misprint on a VW van.
The Chuck Iverson is missing on one side. I know some times these misprints are sort out by some collectors.

These are the oldest three cars that I have. Sixties Airfix Minis. They came with reproduction boxes which are very good.
Both work but tyres are rock hard. I can get replacements but the wheels are very small and I think would be damaged
if I tried to remove the old tyres.

Airfix Ferrari 250LM which has had the rear tyres replaced and goes very well.

All the Airfix cars have working front steering.

The modern models are so detailed now against the earlier stuff, but the earlier stuff wasn’t meant to be tucked away and looked at. I have a small collection of 70’s boxed cars. They are the cars I smashed and cut and re-painted as a kid but these are replacements I now have.

I was at Leman and watched 009 win it’s class with a corvette not far behind!

The baseball cap was worn by the 009 winning car driver David Brabham. I caught it as he threw it whilst on the podium and then getting covered In winners champagne!
First time I’ve ever shared that smile

Some "Limited Edition" cars/sets are more "limited" than others. I bought the 2003 Goodwood Ford GT40 1966 set. There's one on ebay now for a £100 starting bid, with 0 bids. I seem to recall paying about £115 and pre-ordering it from Cove Models in Farnborough. Speculators were buying them up and trying to make a profit on them, but the 10,000 unit run meant there was plenty of supply to meet demand in reality.

That one is number 2972/10000. On the other hand, if you want set number 0001/10000 you'll need to part with £325 as a "buy it now" option from ebay, as it's being sold as shop stock by a shop in Eastleigh.

Anyone after the Mini 60 Diamond edition box set? there's one for sale here... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SCALEXTRIC-C4030A-MINI-... ...which appears to be the Italian Job trio, but with "Mini 60" numberplates instead of the movie plates that would be on an Italian Job set.

Again, though, take care where you buy from, and what price you pay. Even a quick Google shows prices from £109 to £143 for the same item, new from online sources.

I found this site... http://www.scalextricguide.com/item_details.asp?it... ...while Googling this morning. Lists lots of slot cars for sale, and possibly has details of catalogue numbers, etc too, if you're willing to waste some time on there. My cars are all boxed and stacked in removal packing boxes in my garage right now, which probably isn't doing them any good. I've got some oddments, curiosities, and rarities among them, including a Minardi Lamborhini M191 F1 car, boxed and as far as I can see never run. My last house didn't have space to set a track up, but the loft in my new place looks much more suitable due to a more open roof construction. I may yet be able to get it boarded out and move the cars indoors to get them going again.

I was chatting to a model shop owner who made the following point about "collectors" editions

As they are collectors editions most are kept boxed and pristine, and if they make a 1000 of them chances are there will be 1000 of them still knocking about in good condition in 10 or 20 years time.

On the other hand something that had 10s of thousands made as toys and were never anything exclusive are much less likely to survive in good boxed condition.

He cited the example of the Corgi toys James Bond DB5
Millions sold, loved as toys, but what are the chances of finding a first edition in a good box with accessories? What would it be worth?

Totally agree. It’s the regular stuff that will be worth more if in good condition or as I’ve said previously the liveries that didn’t sell well, basically the models nobody likes. The collector stuff is better packed and will always be looked after. Collectors will always keep mint. That said I do like the collector packaging and scalextric versions are well priced new. I think the best single boxed car range they did were the sport versions.

Speaking of rarity, or perceptions of it... https://slotracer.online/community/archive/index.p...

I have a boxed SCX McLaren MP4/4 which I was elated to win on eBay. I'm now glad I didn't pay too much for it, as, according to this article, it's "not as rare as some folk would have you believe".

Slot cars go up and down in popularity like a rollercoaster, or so it seems. When Scalextric launched 'Sport' track and cars, there was a surge in popularity, which also saw second-hand cars rise in popularity. I was lucky to have two decent shops stocking Scalextric track near me, with some really old track accessories in back rooms. I developed a good enough relationship with the ladies in Sandhurst Toys that they'd let me have a dig around in the stock room, in return for me identifying some of the loose spares they had in there. Cove models was a treasure trove as well, with oodles of essentials like tyres and small body spares (mirrors, drivers, etc), along with complete axles, cogs, pinnion gears, etc, that could be used to upgrade/refurbish/modernise/customise old cars. I only wish I'd had the foresight to buy up more of their stock when they closed their doors for the last time.

What I need most of all are a couple of sets of tyres for the Rover SD1 police car. Or failing that a pair of axles complete with wheels/tyres to fit to make one of mine run properly. At one time Scalextric supported a lot of their back catalogue cars with spares, but in the modern era they've moved away from that, which is a shame as most old slot cars that surface at car boot sales are runners, even if they need a couple of minutes with a soldering iron. But it's the old rubber tyres that crack, split, or harden to a shine that mean you can't run them.
i was even considering trying to convert the less valuable ex-set, unboxed cars to run on 'Digital' track at one point. Then came the move to a house with no useable loft, and my active period in the hobby came to a close. My interest is perking up again since I found the cars during our move though. Looking forward to seeing if my 'Orange Arrows' F1 car (Ninco, I think) is still as quick as I remember it being...

I only have these two of any rarity.

I need to replace the plastic lid for the Alfa.

The skyline is particularly annoying. It was bought in T K Maxx about 8-9 years ago. There was a whole shelf of the various models. But I thought it was a die cast and only had limited money so only bought one.

After all this chat about limited editions I received an email from Pendle slot racing about a VW van. Limited run of 200.
Arrived today and the magnet has been removed and the van has done a good few laps already.

Are there any sites that you guys use for layouts?

I'm in the process of finishing off a games room and will have a space about 2m x 4m (maybe a bit more) to set up a Scalextric. It'll be on the floor and the idea will be to let it wind around other bits of furniture (though there won't be much up there - sofa bed will pull out and sit over it etc).

Took the plunge and bought the ARC Air power base to upgrade my current set up. Paid £50 for it from AC Models in Eastleigh which is as cheap as I've seen it and they're local so I collected it today. I wish I'd bought it sooner, for a start the wireless controllers are worth the cost alone. The App stuff adds some great extra value to everything, especially the ability to race a pace car allowing for single player options.

For a bit of fun I've organised a Scalextric & Pizza night at work in a few weeks, should be interesting! I need to figure out the best way of utilising what ARC has to offer to make the evening fun.
