There's an LED (possibly infra red?) in the "chip" in the bottom of the car and an optical sensor in the track just before the flipper (that's why the curved lane changers have a special track piece that has to be used just before them). Pressing the button turns the LED on on the car which tells the lane changer to flip over.

Cunning stunts!

Yes, and the digital crossover is 1.5 pieces long by the looks.

The R2 corner has a half straight ahead of it with the sensor in it.

Yes, but as I understand it, that cars are coded to the controller, so with only two lanes, you can run up to six cars on the track. Which can then pass, changing from one lane to the other if required, but I haven't been able to work out what decides how you change lane and when.

I have an old analogue set. I've paid no attention to Scalextrix until now, as my son's about ready. My mind is officially blown.

Theres also ARC, where you can use an ipad or tablet as a lap counter/timer (I think there is a digital version with wireless controllers too) which works well, and Spark Plug, where you can use your phone as a wireless controller.

THAT is AWESOME.

So glad they are working on these compatible but huge improvements, not resting on laurens and running it into the ground.

ARC is great. I have an analogue set up with ARC air. I use the pace car function quite a bit for single player races. Although you can only set the pace car at a single speed I load the pace car up with magnets and sticky tyres. That way it can lap very quickly while I try and beat it in a standard car.

Sounds good to me!

Recently got an ARC one on ebay and its great: pit stops, tyre wear etc is great fun. Would like to go digital but dont have any digital cars at the moment and cannot solder so thats on hold for now...

But would recommend the arc system and the app. It doesnt work on my tablet. But does on another one.

Also read why the older cars are so bad these days: aparently they draw more power, so the new transformers dont give them enough juice to be powerful. I guess its a sort of "balance of performance" that the ACO love!!

Oh, I understand the new track is more slippery then the older track, so the older cars need modern rubber to be competitive. Im not sure: the Police SD1 on 40 year old cracked rubbed oversteering on the straight is great fun...

...but changing the tyres and surprising my boys by being competitive and becomming a driving god with modern rubber is to tempting!!

Another birthday, another Scalextric car smile Very lucky to get a Back to the Future Delorean. Really nice model and even comes with the lightening pole.

I don't have a track set up so store the cars away. As I pick up cars now and again it's easy to forget what I have bought. A few recent highlights:
45th anniversary Escort Mexico - even comes with the waterslide decals as per the original (which was one of my first cars from Christmas 1977):

And for me, the classic Escort MKII rally car - Ari Vatanen Rothmans car:

Must get a track set up again at some point to give these a spin.

Just setting up a permanent place for the new Jadlam SL6 Scalextric set, it'll make a good place for us Lotus Anoraks to meet up and play. I knew I'd find a use for those expensive Vossen Wheels I bought for my CL65 one day

My digital set up has been packed away in the loft for 8 years. Now I have two children I might trust my 4 year old on a little circuit on 10% throttle!!

It's an Armortek 1/6th scale Panzer 4 all metal, weighs about 100 kilos deadly accurate model. Has proportional smoking exhaust, main gun recoils and flash, turret movement plus the tank crew are animatronic it's a nice piece of kit.

The Jadlam kit arrived (DPD not that careful with packages) all set up and it's really brilliant, a lot more to learn with pit stops like making sure you are in the right lane to enter it etc.
Not sure who managed to fit this on an 8X4 sheet though, as you can see I had to extend the corner to accommodate the pits.
Looking forward to endless fun with races.
