'O' Gauge Model of Heaton Lodge Junction
Discussion
Thats the thing about modelling isnt it. you get stuck in your own world.. time and money loses all meaning..and then, for some totally unrelated reason you take a step back from it all.... and then the introspection starts. You take a look at what you have been doing with fresh, normalised eyesight. And you start to think what have I been doing with my life? Why have I invested so much of myself in this and to what end.... you start to go cold on the whole idea... you start to peruse other interest, other forums, other threads... and then you find a post like this. As I have just done and you (I) start to realise that your (my) little project was small potatos. A mere weekend frippery in comparisson to what others are doing. All the time you thought you were big time... and actually you're just a fairweather tinkerer!!
I feel very small and unimportant.
The only consolation I have is that one day it will happen to you Mr OP.

Very true, I hope I don't come across as the big 'I am' ref this project as this isn't about impressing anyone, it's just something I've wanted to do for years to 'take me back' to those happy years. I feel very small and unimportant.
The only consolation I have is that one day it will happen to you Mr OP.

Wacky Racer - I'm hoping it'll be completed by late next year but it has to operate like a production line which it has so far!
DIW - pm sent nice to hear from you.
One more thing, Heaton Lodge will be set on a frosty December morning hence no foliage on trees, the light frost yet to be completed. I spent many hours freezing my nu*s off there during the Christmas holidays in the 1980's.
I'll update every week or so.

Either you are having a very subtle tongue in cheek admirin comment
OR you couldnt handle anything bigger than a circle on a 6x4 bo
ard?
Whichever it is.....
If you are ever near Didcot on a weekend, go and have a look at Pendon Museum. It will blow your balls off. If there is anything that says what you are implying it is that. But is has the opposite effect as can be seen by the OP and countless other modellers. Whilst prefection is only obtainable by few modellers many come close to it. The Hobby magazines can show this trough the years as the standard gets higher and is shown by the photos in them The Model Railway Journal is a prime example. have a look at the early issues and whilst the layouts are of a much higher standard that the ones shown in Railway Modeller, MRC etc, those in the recent issues are so good you have to look twice before realising they are not full size pics. Likewise with the Model engineering bods on here. taken at the right angle they are 'the real thing'
Or if you are in Brighton go and see Dr Bradbury Winters 5in gauge loco model of an LBSC D2 class'Como' see this link
http://www.model-engineer.co.uk/sites/7/documents/...
And scroll down ,and then bear in mnd thsi ,odel is over 120 years old and done by a Doctor, without all the modrn gizmos we have now to assist us
OP you carry on, it looks superb and i wish you every success in completing it. Just keep us informed of progessThere is a saying that says
'Sets your sights so high, that even failure is a success'
Those that can.. Do, those that cant sit on their keyboard and poopoo it
Go for it

no, it just came out a bit wrong. Its jaw-dropping stuff indeed. I guess I was trying to say that modellers are such driven folk that "bigger fish" events are inevitable. examples for me would include (you can google them)... finding ed diments lego concorde and vulcan, some nutters building a 1:1 scale millenium falcon... that model railway, in germany i think, where all the planes take off and land. And, of course, this. maybe these things have always gone on and the internet just makes them visible, but TBH it really wouldnt surprise me to find someone working on a Heathrow model. 1:1. in matchsticks!
Thanks so much for all the exibition recomendations.. I will defo be trying to visit them.
Im totally in awe of this project though. A model railway that needs an artic to transport it and a stadium to set it up?!?!?!
There's absolutely no poopooing from me. just the sound of my jaw going slap on the ground.

Sky,
I thought as much. sometimes when i go to an exhibition, i go home and throw what i have in the bin! But the next time the part looks that much better, especially when i am basically self taught in lather milling and brazing/welding. I am building a 5in LNER B17 loco live steam. Thought i would get it done in about three years, and 7 years later about 50% complete. As regard Pendon i think it is open weekends only, a it is all volunteer, including the modellers, all of whom stated out from scratch so to speak. The main scene is a '00' model of The Vale of White Horse and all the buildings are models of originals. even down to the interiors It feels you are actually flying over the real thing, and the nightime effct where the house lights and street gas lamps come on is just amazing. It has been WIP for over 50 years and Roye England, the guy who tought it up is long gone but his memory will live on forever. try snd make an effort to see it. you will not be disappointed.

Look forward to seeing this progress. I take it there will be scale kids leaning on the relevant gate with a model photographer at the top of the embankment?
This, all day long.Would love to see this when finished. Make sure you tell us where you're going to exhibit it.
Thanks for the kind comment - I'm a bit of a fine detail freak, I really enjoy it.
I just photo the real thing and copy it. It is 'O' gauge finescale - (not S7)to answer your question but the track is hand built using Peco flat bottom rail and their own concrete sleepers. The track is built and ballasted by a chap whose been doing it for years, he's not cheap but you can see the result..
There's a double junction on board 14 (we aren't there yet) which is also to scale and 12ft long
