A search of fleabay revealed that Minichamps, who are not known for producing inaccurate detailing, also produced plain white MP4/4's, MP4/5's & MP4/8's.
Of about 30 listings on eBay for MP4/4s of various sizes. None are plain white. 4 have tobacco livery. The rest are barcodes. Of the ones recently sold, none are plain white. The following eBay listed items are all plain white - as in no Marlboro, McLaren or bar code decals.
22209194271
401066634440
401108552807
152042364439
111340089848
And there are more.
Regardless of previous comments I still think that for £2.99 the model, livery arguments aside, is pretty good value for money.
The rest of the model looks pretty accurate. Even down to the aerials behind the roll hoop.
I don't think that anyone said than the MP4/4 raced in pure white livery. It is just the usual petty PH crap that we come to love & expect!!
So maybe time to leave it & agree to dis-agree.

401066634440 - Isn't Minichamps, it's Premium X.
401108552807 - Isn't Minichamps, it's TSM.
152042364439 - Isn't Minichamps, it's the same TSM again.
111340089848 - Isn't Minichamps, it's the same TSM again.
You've moved the goalposts somewhat since your earlier comment:

Per above, here's the Minichamps approach to dealing with the branding issues, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Minichamps-1-12-Ayrton-S... Note the gaps in the pinstriping for the lettering overlay. And one that's "been done"....http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Minichamps-1-12-Ayrton-Senna-JPS-Lotus-Renault-97T-1st-GP-win-Portugal-GP-1985-/111840286776 (using something like this set of decals http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-12-LOTUS-97T-AYRTON-SE...FWIW
The original critical comments made about the quality and accuracy are valid. The 2.99 is, as far as I can see, a one off, for the first model, after which you're paying more.
It might be OK for 2.99. I feel compelled to go and buy one now to see for myself. The advert doesn't say it's OK for 2.99, it makes statements off being an accurate representation of the car, which it isn't.
If people are happy with it for 2.99, that's all that matters. Just let's not get carried away with what it is.

A model is either accurate or it's not. Even if it's not accurate, but looks 'right', then that's good enough. To me, these models don't tick either box. Whatever, each to their own.

Right, I have one here in my hand. And, per above, for £2.99 it's fine. £7 might be pushing it. The basic form is OK. The paint and finish aren't great. If people are happy with it for 2.99, that's all that matters. Just let's not get carried away with what it is.
However, the spiel in the literature is not representative.
I quote:

Original livery with the driver's name.
Cockpit - Realistic in every detail.
Mechanical parts - All perfectly reproduced.
Panini's blurb would have you believe you could drive the bloody thing!Cockpit - Realistic in every detail.
Mechanical parts - All perfectly reproduced.

Anyway, to avoid adults arguing over just how accurate the model is, i have emailed Panini to ask them why they chose the produce the model in plain white.
So as not to encourage kids to take up smoking, all scale models sold in the UK are not allowed to have tobacco advertising displayed on them. This is of course annoying for those of us who like accurate models but the usual work around is to buy aftermarket decals. I had to do this for the 1/18 Minichamps M23 model I have.I expect you will get a reply from Panini stating something similar.
I had a look at the MP4/4 issue in Asda as they had a few sitting in their magazine isle, for a sub £10 model I didnt think it was all that bad and of course it comes in a little plastic display case and you get a magazine. I was more disappointed by the lack of content in the accompanying magazine though. I think only 4 pages were dedicated to the car!

Looking at the model and buying a decal kit to put the Malboro logos on......
It appears that the decals already on the model are incorrectly positioned, most obviously the "powered by Honda" is way too far up the cowl. There is no space to fit the Malboro logo in.
(It's not me btw)

And not in a positive sense. The nose cone is a personal highlight.

Today I received a reply from Panini regarding the choosing of the livery for the MP4/4.
Attached is a photo of the car in plain white livery. With Senna driving - looks like it might have been at Imola or Monza however I don't know for certain.
It looks as though the model is actually historically correct as per their adverts.

Reply says - it looks like there are different models. The company have chosen the following car: http://media.cdn.mclaren.com/images/heritage/hero/...
I haven't got my model to hand so how does it differ to the photograph?

As I said, they NEVER raced without either Marlboro or barcode markings.
That's Silverstone by the way.

I had a reply that it's law that they can't put tobacco logos on them! I wasn't bored enough to go any further or ask why the build quality is so poor that little BS2 broke the rear wing off in 10 mins followed by all 4 tyres. It's a wreck!
