I'd feel a bit shabby about buying a knock-off of something Lego has on the shelves. But it is also true that Lego prices have passed the "reasonable considering its quality" level and they're indulging in some limited edition BS to boot.

So with that waffer thin justification I'm thoroughly enjoying reacquainting myself with interlocking brick systems on a Black GT3 kit (always hated the orange, now knock offs give me the choice of white and green too)

I was discussing this with someone the other day. We concluded that 2 strong indicators that something is overpriced are speculators and a bootleg market.

With that in mind, I would say Porsche was a pretty good analogy for Lego today.

Have any of you brick enthusiasts seen any big boxes of generic bricks while trawling the kit sites?

I'm a bit bored of building specific things to plans with my daughter and want to get her a load of mixed bricks - we've got the Lego ones which obviously come at a price and I've got some compatible ones from Smyths but it's always 400 of the "1-ers" and a handful of actual useful bits to make up the box.

I was hoping for some kind of 10000 piece brick extravaganza with roof tiles, windows, wheels, substantial bricks etc - has anyone seen anything like this from overseas?

May or may not be of use but you can buy fake Lego in most Wilko kids departments by the tub - comes in a small range of colours and various brick sizes, it’s not expensive per tub/cup either

Worth hitting your local re-use / charity shops. The local recycling place in our town just gifted the Lego club in the library a massive box full.

My wife works at the library, runs the Lego club, and brought it all home for a clean before it went to the club. If you can imagine 3 cubic feet of grubby Lego in the bath, full of hot water and all the Milton sterilising tablets we could find, you'd be about right.

My method is to pour the Lego into a pillowcase, tie the end up and sling it in the washing machine. Works a treat.

Dishwasher and a mesh bag - no messing around and it comes out dry!

I'm really amazed and saddened that people are buying this counterfeit stuff. What this company does is utterly disgusting and I honestly would have thought that intelligent people on PH would understand the implications of supporting such theft. If it was a car, let's say a Porsche 991, which some Chinese were selling an exactly copy of (but made of slightly inferior materials) but calling a Porsh - in exactly the same typeface and logo design, to make it as blatant as possible - everyone would understandably be seething. Using the excuse that a real Porsche is too expensive wouldn't wash, either.

But because it's just Lego everyone thinks this is okay. Lego get to spend the money designing all the items and putting them into production, then these turds just copy the parts and punt them out on the cheap. Supporting it is just wrong.
The stuff I'm looking at - the Land Rover Defender and Ferrari 312T - have never been made by Lego, as far as I can tell.

What's wrong with buying that?

Yes... and no. Bear in mind that Lepin make sets that Lego don't too.

Personally speaking, it it's in production with Lego I'll buy it, if it's out of production (at a huge premium) then I'll look at alternatives.

No way I would spend £3500+ on a UCS Falcon, but with Lepin I have two - for less than 10% of that price!

I'm guessing by reading the post that English isn't hulk3's first language, so maybe lost in translation, though their English is still way better than my attempt at any other language on the planet! biglaugh

Shame. Hopefully Lego have had a kick up the arse and will either stop the silly pricing or increase supply of the halo models. I remain over the moon with my Lepin buys. I have a grand's worth of the real stuff still to build, before anyone starts.

I totally understand and appreciate where you're coming from. The ridiculous price increases of decent 1:18 scale models killed the hobby for me. They all went in the loft and are shortly to be sold off.

I'm very, very fortunate in having a friend work for Lego who is happy to share her discount meaning that I don't wince as much when purchasing sets. Without that I'd really struggle to justify most of them.

That is a shame, I'll need to try and get more of the discontinues sets then, before they all disappear.
