What actually is it? Is it cheap?
Remember Lipos come in all different sizes, they arent all the same.
Also, most RTRs benefit from having their shocks serviced when you first get them, just so you know they are put together properly.

Body super fragile, all four dampers losing oil - between 30-70% lost on each of them. Wheels balloon like crazy. Shell doesn’t shut properly and had to move the ESC as cables were fouling the shell. Says it will take a Lipo 3s but only fits if you move things around like the receiver etc. Dealer doesn’t give a hoot and won’t refund. Car has been used twice for a total of 25mins.
What car is it?

It’s a Hobbytech DB8-SL - just under £300. It has the potential to be a pretty good car I think BUT it isn’t up to standard of a new RTR. I don’t think it’s right to have so many issues within a week of buying it and the dealer just doesn’t care; says it’s completely normal to have to make amendments from the outset - even arguing that it’s completely normal for the dampers to drain down and need filling after every use!!!!

The ballooning of the tyres is just ludicrous and hops all over the place but I think the emptying suspension hasn’t helped, the brushless motor is so powerful it has 5settings on the ESC to adjust how the power is put down - 1 is the lowest and on damp grass it still has all 4 wheels spinning! If suspension can be sorted then I plan to get the tyres off and gorilla tape inside to reinforce and see if that reduces / resolves the handling. If suspension isn’t resolved then I will be contacting Trading Standards / Sale of Goods Act and going through the small claims court. The dealer laughed at me when I told him that and reckons I don’t have a case.

Sounds like you've had a rough deal and 300 quid is still a lot of money.

Tyres ballooning is quit a common issue, I've had good results with wheels such as these on my slash 4x4

Shocks loosing oil sounds more like not fit for purpose if it is out of the box (assuming you haven't been sending it on a ramp over your house). I agree that they can need rebuilding but an RTR in the first instance before any major servicing should be ready to run.

LiPos come in many shapes and sizes with multiple different ratings, if it is too fast in its current form, you could try a 2S.

Did you buy online and with a credit card? Maybe you could claim back or use distance selling regs?

Made the mistake of paying cash (have sold a few bits in the bay recently so had it sitting around (I don’t want to go to the bank or post office given what’s going on).

I have collected the ‘repaired/serviced’ shocks this morning so I will see if it resolves when I give it a run later. If not I will be going through the right processes to get my money back.

After 20+ years bought my first Tamiya....TT01E

Here are a few pictures. Plan to put a few more hop ups. Suspension is currently friction type. Looking at either TRF or Yeah reacing oil dampers.

Any other TT01E owners out there i would be happy to hear what other worthwhile mods are worth getting.

Slippery slop this RC business...

Neat work on the TT-01. My advice would be not to go too deep into modifying as it's essentially an entry level kit - what you've collected so far seems pretty solid. Need to be able to justify another upgraded chassis kit, it's a slippery slope...! :-)

Just thought I'd share my most recent kit, an Orlandoo Hunter 1:32 scale. Fiddly but satisfying. I don't like wheel transmitters so didn't want to use the all-in-one ESC solution for lighting, so it's got the basic ESC which also controls the side light LEDs on a 3rd RC channel switch, plus a 3-Racing LED control board stripped back to the bare minimum to save space and give me brake lights, full beams, reversing lights and flashing indicators.

Cheers! I think the only other mod i might do it some oil dampers. Not sure which ones. The standard friction ones don't sit well with me.

Was just reading about wet running in of a motor. i.e. submerging brushed motor in water and run on low throttle for 20 mins..... eek

Are there any other key mods you would suggest?

Lovely 4x4 BTW!

If it's fully ball raced already then I'd probably be fitting oil shocks and calling it done. I've always bought Tamiya CVA minis.

Lipo is the way to go if you're heading to brushless. Upgrade the non-chassis specific parts as you go along which will help the price of a new and better chassis-only kit all the more palatable eventually... wink

I still spend more time building/upgrading than driving any of mine though...

Thanks very much. CVA is what i was also considering as they are a 1/4 of the price of the TRF. Will go for them.

Car is fully ball raced.

Lipos would be nice but dont want the worry that goes with them!

Have West London Race track not too far away. Will wait until weather improves then get down there for a few laps.

So far have used Modelsport website and also ebay tonystamiyaparts975 for parts. Apparently Tamico (in Germany) is good if you have a bulk order. Do you have any other recommendations?

Tamico are perfectly good for small orders too, I use them a lot (delivered to here in Germany mind). I also use Modelbau Seidel and Modelbau Berlinski but I don't know if they deliver internationally.

late edit for spelling

West London are running a winter series this year and I highly recommend going to visit them on one of their race days

They have a tamiya class and the guys there are very knowledgeable when it comes to making them work.

However don’t blame me if you end up going down the slippery slope of racing like I did 18years ago with my son
Started off visiting a race club with a tamiya, now a multiple national champion and travels all over Europe racing (when COVID permits frown )

Completely new to the hobby, but I've bought two nitro cars so far and been gifted one

IMG_20200926_204209 by Steve, on Flickr

The truggy is my other halfs and as far as we can tell is a Hong nor X1CRT (loads of HPI trophy parts fit though) and the Savage is mine. I destroyed the already mostly destroyed shell so painted up a new one

I have now also been offered an HPI trophy which has had a load of money spent on it for cheap, So i guess I have the bug now laugh

With regards to the TT01. Yes it is an entry level car, so dont go spending loads on hopups otherwise you could have just bought a really nice high spec car to start with. The amount some people spend trying to polish a turd is ridiculous (nothing against the car but it is not a performance vehicle).
Just get any oil shocks, alloy centre shaft and steering linkage and you will be sorted.

As for the desert buggy, it's exactly what you expect from RTR. You have to look over and check every part of it. A quick service of the shocks is always neccessary. They will be nice and smooth after though and much better.
You are being a bit silly threatening trading standards. If you bought from a decent model shop though he could easily just take them apart and put them together again for you.
Plus £279 although that may sound like a lot, is entry level in the world of RC. It doesnt look too bad though, but cars like that are just starting points and do need to be maintained and checked regularly for smooth running. They really arent plug in and forget.

Beware you need some additional bits but much of these can usually be found in the sale as well!

Agree with above. You could spend silly money on the TT01 E.....

List of my all my hop ups:-

1. Aluminum Propeller Joint & Shaft 54026
2. Metal motor mount 53666
3. Aluminum motos heat sink 53664
4. Pin type wheel adapter 53056
5. 22T,23T AV pinion gear set 50357
6. CVA mini shock unit cylinder 53619
7 Full ball race (non Tamiya parts)

These are the last of the hop ups going onto the TT01 E. If the steering is too sloppy may up grade steering unit.

Nice link

Do like the TT02

Seem like a much better package than the TT01
