ferrari 250 gto realising a dream
Discussion
Hi There.
Well bar the petrol flap, bonnet air scoop and front jacking points ive finished.Il be doing the tidying up and painting the couple of parts left in the summer when its hot and the paint will take nicely. a few photos.
Used the origonal front frame to make a copy 2nd attempt was successful
.
After shaping the curve around a tapered sweet bowl, perfect size, bonded the screen
.
Fiited the screen, windscreen wipers and window washers, and there we are 99.9% completed
.
.
.
A very, very big thankyou to anyone who has looked, a BIGGER thankyou to all who have looked and paid comments on this thread. In fact had helped to encourage me to push this project along, also it has personally given me a library of information to help me with future projects and i hope may help anyone out there that may want to take a project like this on, took me approx 400 hours. (tip!!! dont rush, stop if your not really in the mood). Pound for pound for the hours i put into it i think was great value for money, kept me away from channel flicking and watching repeats on telly.Allowed me to empty my mind of the day to day work ive done just over a year now. Tested my patience but feel better for it and helped to keep dexterity in my hands. Probably damaged my eyesight though ha! ha!.
1/12th GT40 next, just waiting for the photo etch detail kit and descent seats, ive looked at the engine and gearbox which has a awfull lot of detail missing which im going to put back in, namely distributor and leads, nuts and bolts. The rest of the kit is very well done but needs tweaking/extra detailing.
If i get to put the Ferrari on youtube later on in the year i will post a message if anyones interested.
Cheers all the best

A wonderful thread, and I am in awe of the talent and hard work it took to do this. I have been luck enough to get very close to a number of full size 250GTOs, and this is a brilliant evocation.
Thankyou for the brilliant comment and for the quality photos you sent in, did actually help me to detail my car.Id have to go to Goodwood to get close to one, but im enjoying looking at the almost finished car. Im glad ive done this thread though, shows whats inside.Cheersrobemcdonald said:
Great stuff looking forward to the GT40 build. Hopefully it will inspire me to make progress with mine..
Thanks Rob.Ive been spoilt building the GT40 for its detail.
I cant get over the poor detailing of the engine/gearbox on the GT40, so ive relented and started it, removing all the nodules that should be nuts and bolts, replaced them with Meng ones and added a few where they are missing.
Scribed the seperation lines for the cylinder head to crankcase, and adding detail to the manifold before i even start. Ive also dropped the chrome parts for this engine in neat bleach to get rid of (only takes a minute) then washed off with warm water. In actual fact most of the chrome is going to be removed.
Robbed the rubber drive shaft gaters from a 1/12th protar Ferrari that got smashed some years ago (new it would come in handy one day). Found some rubber gaters from a couple of 12mm stroke length guages that were in my Works scrap bin, will do nicely for the steering rack.
Hoping to start a new thread soon. Cheers

I wonder if you have this same fastidious attention to detail to other things in your life?
Id like to think i do. I think my work ethic has something to do with it because if i dont do the jobs right, would cost me big time.I pay a lot of the same attention to my weekend mistress F1 SL55 AMG on weekends too.
Here she is, she can be nasty if i dont treat her right. glad my wifes nicer.
.
My wifes comments have been encouraging but with a quiet warning not to over clutter the house.

I really enjoyed this. I was a keen modeller in my childhood but never to that extent. Great work.
Thankyou really appreciated. Thought of taking model building back up again?, i starved myself from building models for quite some years. I didnt realise until recently how much i missed the smell of glue . It could be the reason why i kept going. . Cheershenryk001 said:

I’m not going to be doing any of that myself. I think your attention to detail is astonishing and will no doubt put my effort to shame.
I’ve been looking at your work on the ww2 models. So there would never be putting anyone to shame there. Fabulous work at the scale your working on. I couldn’t do it.I do believe that the gt40 itself stands up as a good model to build as standard as you are doing. There’s plenty of detail on its own. The Model factory Hiro models are so detailed, Tamiya and some Protar kits only come close to them for detail and quality. I understand now why the kits they make are higher in cost in comparison. Personally I need to get this kit up to or at least near to looking comparable in quality if they sit next to each other. Just my choice or should I say have been forced by my own previous actions to do this project justice. CheersGassing Station | Scale Models | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
