decal help

I've got an old Quartzo 935 model where some of the decal are coming off any recommendations for repairing this?



It's the decal on the sill, but on the other side, it's lifted off completely.

Anything you do will risk damaging them beyond repair.

If you can't get replacements, and assuming they are waterslide decals, I'd try wicking a tiny dot of Johnson's Klear behind them to re-attach to the surface, and then put a dab of Microsol decal softener on top to help them conform to the surface, then leave to dry in a warm place for 24 hours.

If you don't have any Klear (which is likely unless you're a keen modeller!), you could also try dilute PVA as a substitute.

Basically you need to replace the decal glue with something that dries very thin, and clear.

Thanks, I was advised to use acrylic varnish.

I did find this on the Grand Prix Models web site Micro Liquid Decal Film by Microscale.

I am tempted to try building a few resin kits there are some models I want that you can't buy ready built.

Klear is effectively a very thin acrylic varnish. If you use standard, un-thinned varnish, you risk the decals being raised off the surface slightly. I do have some Liquid Decal Film, but have never tried it; it may well be as effective as Klear or PVA.

You'll have to spend quite a bit on EBay to get genuine Klear; the original formula isn't available.

That's not the same as Johnson's Klear:

Kristal Kleer is similar to PVA, in that its a thick white liquid that is transparent when set - it may well be PVA based.

You're not kidding about price £54 for 500ml original bottle, found somebody selling 30ml for £2.25 (£4 p&p) will see what it's like.

If the decals are in 2's on the car and one is ok then you could photograph the good one, shrink it to actual size and then print it out on waterslide transfer paper.

Easier than it sounds too!!

It worked quite well, I was more than happy with the results when finished.
Below are a few pics for you to judge yourself. Top pic is of an original Waltzer car. Bottom 2 are water slides I applied to the 1/24th scale model cars.

I also used very thin photo paper too on the outside of the ride for the artwork then varnished it. Both methods great but the water slides on things like cars etc. are just that bit more like it's been painted.
