Hi, so Ive been trying to figure out what paint to use for what materials, I know Henryk used TS-89 for his chassis color, I was looking at my pictures of the car from the Simeone museum and I think that this X-3 Royal Blue looks pretty close to the actual car by itself, what do you think? [url]
^this is X-3 over a black primer

^my best photo of the actual chassis color, taken of right next to the shift lever.

Hi! Skryl.
Looks ok to me. The only potential issue is IMO at the 1/12th scale paint doesnt reflect light as well and once parts are built around the chassis the blue will become too dark and any other smaller details will become lost when looking into the cars interior. The pearl helps to reflect light especially if you have the area illuminated. I did mine with 4 coats over grey primer which got darker the more coats i added. If you take a look at the photos on pages 7-8 you will see the difference between normal light and using a flash. Im sure you have younger eyes than me,like i said yours looks ok without any added parts.
Do what you see is best its your project. Regards

ok, I have some packets of different pearl pigments (mica powder) that I can try mixing in to this color to give it that little more reflectiveness, although there Is also a part of me that likes the darker tone, as Ive seen some beautifully done models that were painted with all around darker and greyed out colors, almost as if the photos were taken through a steampunk-style filter, which is a really cool effect. Ill try some test pieces with different colors/amounts of pearl and share them here to see what looks best.

also I wonder If I could achieve the same effect with just a high gloss coat. Im assuming the real paint would have been a single stage with the colour and clear mixed, but I dont think adding a gloss clearcoat would be much different in the scale.

In period photos the tubs always looked black and it was only when I saw the restoration of the McLaren/Amon car that I realised otherwise.

So then would It be more accurate if I did leave it darker? I did ask when I was at the Simeone museum and they said that the car was in nearly the same form as it was during the race, other than having a different engine (which was fixed, thankfully).

it is Likely even if there are period photos in "color" (as far as they had in the 60s) then the dark, non reflective colors would look black. And I know from seeing it myself that the interiors were not bright at all. I think Id prefer to go the more accurate way as opposed to making It bright with high contrast, Ill still fiddle around with different mixtures before settling on one though.

I have a GT40 in my collection but I cheated...

I have to commend the OP on his craftsmanship.

henryk, I've spent the past couple of days reading and re-reading this thread in preparation for starting my own model. I am really impressed with the level of detailing and engineering you have put into the build. It is an inspiration to other modelers, not only of the Ford GT40 but other car models as well. The issues you have identified and the "fixes" you developed act as a template for others. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Hi Henryk
I'm a late starter on this project and you thread is super helpful!
However, a lot of the pics seem to have lost half of the image - is there any way you can refresh?
cheers
John

Hi! Plasmaman,
I haven't been on here for a while and only just seen your comment.
I don't see a issue from my side on PC or phone but i do know that if your using a secureline VPN or on Mozilla Firefox there have been issues with
not being able to see photos.

suggest going onto Microsoft edge or temporarily turning off your VPN.
Good luck with your build. Would be nice to see your progress

That Shelby Collectables Ford GT is a pretty inaccurate model, and there’s no excuse for that as it was a Shelby team car.
