Intension is to make it the same way as the originals and stack layers of template cut veneer and sculpt the prop by hand.
User name checks out.

Haha. biggrin

Thanks for the comments. I'm happy with the build.

Just need to look into making a case for it now.

That's a fantastic build cool

But I wish I hadn't clicked on your thread - because up until now I've had little interest in aircraft kits of that period ......

..... did you get yours in the UK (expensive?) or cheaply in Japan ( plus expensive shipping?) type.

Thanks. Yes the kit is a little more interesting than the standard ones.

I got mine from amazon for around £125 shipped from Japan. It is still about the same price on there. There are a lot of parts in the kit so it is well worth the money IMO.

I see what you mean about the prop, in those pictures in that link it doesn't do justice to the rest of the kit. It should have at least some sort of wood graining on it.

Thanks thumbup .

I presume that there's no further import duty or VAT to pay?

You're going to need an expensive display case...
I've just had two cases made by Paul Moss at https://www.inperspextive.com/index.php?route=comm...

Reasonable prices and lightening quick service.

I have no connection.

I've been looking at getting pre cut Acrylic sheet and that's not cheap either.

To create a 500mm X 500mm X 250mm case its going to cost around £70 for the material. His prices seem ok for fully built.

My old grandfather, long since gone I’m afraid, used to build these for real. SE5’s actually, but same kind of thing. I’ve often wondered about trying that. Anybody seen pictures of the full size glider Sydney Camm built before WW1?

I would love to build one too. Your grandad had an awesome job.

He did. He was a carpenter, and was put into the RFC and sent to the RAE at Farnborough. It sure as anything beat the trenches.

More progress.

Not happy with the plastic prop in the kit I decided to make my own from walnut and beech veneer.

Bonded the veneer together using PVA wood glue, clamped and waited 2 days to fully dry.

Scaled a drawing from the internet of a standard British Wooden Propeller from that era to template from.

I have profiled one side and it seems to have come out really nice. Well chuffed with the look and finish.

Excuse the upside down photo. Not sure what’s happened there. smile
