There is no quill, just z dovetails. This has cause loads of issues with the head being drawn down onto the workpiece while drilling or milling. The gib locks are just locking levers. I’m not convinced the gibs (or even the machining of the slides) is right, because I’ve found it impossible to adjust them without play and/or stiffness. End of the day it’s a cheap and fairly nasty bit of equipment.

Drilled the counterbores on the fork bosses:



Also chamfered the bosses.

Then drilled the pin holes:



Turns out the pre-ream drill I used was too big, so the reamer didn’t cut anything. I measured the drill at 4.7 (same as I used for the brass sliders), but…anyway.

Made some filing buttons:



And filed the rounded ends:



Then chamfered the sides:



Progress so far:





I suppose I could hand ream the holes and brass blocks at 5mm, (which is about 0.009” more than 3/16”). I’ve already got a reamer and some 5mm stainless rod. Seems par for the course for me these days to end up correcting something, so no big deal.

Added bosses to the fork faces, which made them a bit less clunky, and also equalised the thicknesses of the three bits of fork:

Amazing as always.

I've just had a two week holiday and to be honest if I spent the amount of time making a toy, that you have on here my wife would crucify me. I spent my holiday with a extensive list of jobs to do ranging from rewiring, putting in a new cooker, fixing a dent and injector on a car, fixing a toilet, doing some decorating...the list goes on and on.

I long for the days (probably when I retire) when I can say to the wife, 'I'm going into my workshop now to make a model, I'll be out in a couple of months.
Makes me laugh just typing it.

You may notice huge gaps in my model building timelines on various threads...Believe me, I spend plenty of time on jobs on the house, cars and garden (in fact our house was a self-build, and I also build two of the cars I own), but I certainly won't be spending all my spare time and holidays on them with or without the approval of the missus! Luckily she does approve, in fact recognises that it's good for mental health to switch off and completely concentrate on something.

For your next challenge, I suggest using the skills you have learned building steam engines to build a steam powered car.

Great thread and interesting following the process, very different material to your usual posts. Curious why the fork bosses were slotted then drilled rather than the other way around? Were they supplied as blanks pre-slotted?

Thanks. I actually can’t remember why I did them in that order! Must have been some reason. I suppose there are several features that need to be either in line or perpendicular to others, so in some ways machining order doesn’t matter because at some point the part has to be re-set in the second orientation. They weren’t blanks, they were just machined from solid steel stock I got from my local supplier.

TBH I screwed these up and need to start again: I modified the hole spacings for the slider bars that the brass bits run in, and so the forks should also have been wider to suit. That’s why I lost interest in it, and now it’s too cold in the workshop.

This is great work, I wish I had half of your machining talents!

I've had this is my garage since I re-discovered it from a house move. It was my late Grandfathers, I think from the 50's maybe? My limited research (and a post on another forum) tells me its a Stuart Turner Sandhurst, but that is all the info I have frown

I'll have a go at it one day if I ever get the time, some kind of drawings, or any kind of machining ability. The first and last time I used a lathe was in Design Technology in the 90's at Secondary school.

I'd not heard of that engine, but a quick Google (and the name on the casting!) confirms it. If you need any advice on how to complete it, then I recommend the Model Engineer forums. If you put the images on there in the "Beginners" section, you will get all the advice you need (and more!).
