After building my DT03 over Xmas and having a bit of fun with it, I've now finished recommissioning my Baja 5b clone after 12 years of sitting in my dad's shed. I know it's not a Tamiya, but thought I'd share a picture.

For those that dont know, it's a clone of a HPI Baja 5B, so 1/5 Scale with a 23cc 2 stroke engine. It's good fun, but bloody noise, so need to find somewhere out if the way to use it. I certainly can't just cross the street and blast it around the library carpark like I do with the DT03! Now that's finished, after spending more money than I can to admit to the wife, I might start fiddling with the DT03 again. Now the weather is breaking a bit I can get out a bit more with my 4yr old and get him driving properly, so when lock down is finally over we can get out and have some fun.
Like that a lot! I've always fancied a large scale, however I just can't justify the cost for the amount of use it would get.
MCI decals can scale up, it would be cool make a large tamiya replica if you could get a body similiar, like a hotshot style for eg.
Some on a large scale forum on Facebook said the exact opposite. I'll have to wait until one of the shells needs replacing and which ever is still surviving will be replicated. It would be quite cool to do them both as replicas of RC from Toy Story though.lol.

I bought mine from eBay 13 or so years ago for 300, but with a seemingly endless wait from China. There are now a few places selling in the UK, and still for alot less than the genuine HPI ones. The main problem I'm going to have is the noise and the mess. It's as noisy and a strimmer bit more annoying with the up and down revs, so can't really use to close to people, and if you do find a nice grassy field away from people it will make a mess of it pretty quickly. I suspect it will spend most of its time hanging up in the garage, with its electric little cousin used the most.

Great story, I'm about 15 minutes from there you so If you fancy another car or 2 on the grid, give me a message. biggrin
I remember running an old IC Kyosho Rampage down there around '93/94.

As for hop-ups, try Timetunnel Models (North Berwick) or Modelsport, also RCJaz and Euro RC are worth a look.
Team Blue Groove for bodies and MCI for Repro decals.
Banggood is pretty good for cheap servos, motors etc if you're careful what you buy I hear.
Thanks Ritchie. Much appreciate the recommendations.

Love your RS Turbo and M3. How's the full size Subaru Brat coming on?

Be more than happy to have you join in when we get going. I've found a fantastic place to go racing. Wood has a new building in Altens. They have a massive carpark with an upper level to look down on the cars. Has the makings of a nice simple layout with a nice long straight. Away to try and speak with the buildings manager for permission.

Lovley set up at Stonehaven. Remember going back after the race only to find barriers over the track frown

Sounds great, thanks. The fullsize Brat is on the road, however as always with projects it's a work in progress and still needs cosmetics. It's a hoot to drive though. I'll drop you a PM. smile

I had a Boomerang way back when, was ballraced and I put a Trinity Motor into it, it had a pretty hard life and I wore it out. I had alot of fun with it, but lost interest in racing because I could not afford the better kits, Optima, Schumacher Cat etc.

I bought myself a Tamiya TT-02 Quattro a few weeks ago and finished the body over the weekend. Body took longer than the chassis build did and the stickers I found difficult, even taking my time and not rushing I made a few mistakes. It looks OK on first inspection but close up its not perfect. I enjoyed the build as much as its first run around my drive yesterday

I have added a ballrace kit and also I upgraded the shocks to Oil Fasttrax ones. I'm running a Ni-mh batter and on the silvercan Torque tuned motor it came with still.

I did the wheels white as the "real life" quattro I remember watching they all in my mind had white wheels and I think it looks better and not that you can see but also painted the Hex Mounts for the hub silver as they are moulded to look like brake discs and I cant remember if the prototype group B stuff ran carbon discs and they parts for the kit were black plastic.

Hoping once we get out of lockdown that I can go and rummage in my parents loft and see if my Boomerang is still there. I would like another Booerang but the prices even of a Re-Re I'm not really willing to pay.

Not sure I would do another TT-02 I want a buggy next with more ground clearance if I can find a Boomerang at a price I'm willing to pay I would get one or I fancy a Optima Turbo Re-Re next... got the bug again !

I always remember the phrase ball raced - but what is it what’s the benefit and how much % does it reduce lap times?

It's replacing the plastic bushings that come with Tamiya kits with ball bearings. Massive difference.

So in my wisdom I decided to buy an upgrade for my son's dt02. It had a silver can sport tuned motor and it was okay, probably a good way for him to learn the controls.

I've now gone so far the other way it's near undriveable laugh

It's a 4000kv motor and I already have a 2s lipo and with it being 2wd, all it wants to do is back flips. Even gradually increasing the throttle until rolling it'll easily pull a massive wheelie at 20-25mph. Top speed is probably 36/37mph.

I'm going to sort out a decent wheelie bar and hopefully some better tyres will aid traction.

Sounds like a laugh! What motor/ESC did you get? Might make a fun upgrade to my DT03, and if that's too much I'll put it in my old TT01.

It's a hobbywing ezrun Max 10 combo. The esc blows the tble tamiya esc out the water.

So after mentioning a couple of times that the Volvo 850 BTCC car from 1995 was one of my two unicorn Tamiya's I'm quite excited to say that one is currently sitting in my living room waiting for me to get home from work to open..

One came up on Ebay over the weekend and the condition suited what I was looking for, I had a clear Paypal credit account so went for it.
The chassis has been used and has the usual scrape marks on the bottom but the shell is unused and very well finished in the box art. It had been used as a shelf queen which is exactly what I will be doing with it as well.
This one is stickered up as the Kelvin Burt variant as well which was what I wanted as I have a set of his overalls from the same season to display alongside it.

Might be worth getting him DNA tested. I have bought stuff before that I hoped my daughter would be mad keen on but she just isn't interested but other stuff she gets really in to...The Oset elec Trials bike went down very well.

Only now had chance to look in to these, Wheelspin do the combo for just shy of £90 so may give it a go.

I just dont know which I 'need' to to for. They do a 3300kv, a 4000kv and a 5299kv all the same price. Is there a reason not to get for the higher KV? Or would a lower KV but presumably higher torque motor be better for the DT and the higher KV be better for something like the TT01. Also at the moment I'm still running NiMh, to be honest I'm still a bit wary of Lipos in a messing about car that I'll be using and ultimately handing over to a 4 yr old. I know I won't get the full results of a brushless setup while still running the NiMh, bit will it still be a step up from the Torque Tuned motor that's in it?

As a half way house, or an as well as in one car or the other, has anyone tried a brushles with the stock Tamiya brushed/brushless ESC? That may be ok for now just for a bit of added fun?

By stock ESC, I meant the current standard Tamiya kit ESC, the TBLE-02S. It will with either run a brushed motor or a brushless.

I've just a bit of reading on it l, and the brushless needs to be a sensored type, between 16.5t and 10t. I've got no idea what the pros and cons of sensored Vs sensorless or what should suit any of my cars best though!
