I am going to ask a potentially dumb question. Going to buy a TT02 kit, my first ever, and I want a rally car but notice some seem to be gravel spec and some tarmac spec.

Other than tyres is there a difference to the chassis? Are they versatile or will a tarmac car be far too loose and difficult on the grass, will a gravel car roll its tyres off the rim on tarmac? Which is more fun to drive? Mostly I want to slide it.

Access to lovely smooth asphalt and maintained grassland isn't an issue.

TT02 cars are all more or less the same chassis I think, with similar ride height (except the TT02B, buggy chassis). Glue the tyres to the rim or they’ll definitely come off and your wheels will be ruined. Should run great on tarmac and gravel, but grass is not really the ideal surface for 1:10 cars unless it’s very short. The XV01 and XV02 are Tamiyas dedicated rally chassis, but they cost a lot more.

One important thing to remember if it’s your first build is to centre the steering servo before installing it, just connect the battery and the steering servo to the receiver making sure that the trim is centered on the controller, then disconnect and fit.

I've not had a TT02, but did (have) a TT01, that I tried turning in to a rally car. I first tried just stiffening the suspension to raise the height a bit, but the droop of the arms was restricted by the chassis, so cut some chassis away. That worked and gave a decent look, but on anything rougher than pea shingle sized stuff it would ground out and just generally not be much fun. What it needed was a sort of dirt track, with dry loose dusty dirt, but alas not much of that around me. It also wouldn't run on grass any longer than a bowls green or well sheep eaten grass on a common. Even 1:10 nitro stadium trucks I had when I was a kid didn't really like grass much more than a your usual 'infrequently cut by the council' type playing field grass. Unless theres 2 of you with similar cars so you can set up a bit of a track and race, then normal tarmac cars, unless really fast, can get a bit boring. Although with drift tyres (basically hard plastic tyres so no grip) a stock TT01/02 can we fun. But at that level of performance they're not that much of a challenge to drive on tarmac. If you want to do more offroady type stuff then a stadium truck or buggy may be better. I've got a DT02 (2wd) and a DF03 (4wd) buggies, and even stock the DT02 is great fun. It'll run on road with the right tyres, and the simplest bit of plywood becomes a jump, and they do take a beating without breaking.

Got my lad a Tamiya Aqroshot for Christmas, which is the racing truck version of the Racing/Neo Fighter. Not exactly to my taste, I prefer the buggy styles, but I think he'll be happier with the truck style and the big wheels.

Lovely! Peak Tamiya! But, more importantly... did you also get the spicier motor?

I think these look great and pretty good value - interested to see pics when you're up and running!

I did yes smile

Waiting on the post man tomorrow to deliver the Super Sabre

I had one for Christmas when I was 7 as my first ever RC car - so some more years later I am going to re-live my childhood Christmas

Wasn't the super sabre the same as the terra scorcher except the ss had a mono shock and slightly different body shell?

Thought one of my boys would love a TAMIYA model for Xmas so started dropping subtle hints like leaving it on YouTube and talking about building electronics which he really enjoys. However we said he wasn’t interested did want it.

So I bought it anyway, it's wrapped up and under the tree with a To Me, from Me tag and I haven’t been this excited for Xmas in years!

No, the Terra Scorcher has its roots in the Thundershot which was later.

The Super Sabre was a Boomerang with red shocks and a 2-piece body.

Thanks, I knew there was a mono shock version. I think I was confused as a friend raced a SS at the same time.

I couldn't wait until tomorrow smile

I need to either pinch a receiver from another car or wait for a new one to arrive to get it going

Ended up with a 21T motor and will run on 2S lipo so should go well - I fully ball raced it when building too

Takes me back, I got one for Xmas as a kid. I converted it to twin shock on the front. I think I used hotshot II suspension or something from the boomerang.

Probably Supershot with twin shocks, I did it to my Boomerang back in the day too.

When I was a kid all the local racers had them, no way on earth could I ever have afforded one. When the time came for a computerised setup it was the 3VC (which I still have).

I have over the years collected quite a bit of old Futaba PCM - I have 4 Field Fore 3 (one doesn't work, one mint and in the box with manual and receiver etc) - I fly (try not to crash) helicopters too and have collected some of the older things like the Field Force 9 and 7, Super 7 etc too

Been a nice easy day today, and spent far longer than I expected getting the Avante in to a roller - I am not sure I like the "Special Pink" wheels, so may still find a set of original wheels and paint it blue wink or Get a set of white wheel and paint it box colour black

Gotta love an Avante, I built one for a friend the first time around.

I still have a fully working Hirobo Shuttle heli.
