Love it! This was the first Tamiya car in my circle of friends as a kid. Couldn't believe how fast it seemed at the time.

This and the Super Sabre have a special place in my affections
Looks awesome and takes me back. It also reminded me of how rubbish and exposed the battery cables were on them.

My plan before Christmas was to ask my wife for a Tamiya Neo Fighter Buggy as a present, but when I had a look at the kit it wasn’t in the “traditional” style Tamiya box and wouldn’t have taken me any time to build so I decided against it, and a new pair of motorcycle boots took its place.

I was in Japan 7 or 8 years ago and brought back a Tamiya Sand Scorcher (so cheap compared to here), which I had great fun building but sold it a few years ago. I then bought an Egress kit when it was last reissued but ended up selling that (unbuilt) as I was in between houses. I regretted selling it, and as they have just been reissued I’ve just bought one from Tamico. Even with the import duty it will still be quite a bit cheaper than UK sellers. I’m also going to order a Buggy Champ to build and run as I have a spare Futaba radio set I bought in Japan. The Egress will probably be built as a shelf queen as I love the way it looks!

Oh this is a cool thread. Used to have these guys. Did debate a little while ago about buying another one ...

Tamiya Grasshopper II

Tamiya Manta Ray

And also, (not Tamiya or a car but hey ho) a Tyco Typhoon II

Just completed, my reissue #58441 Buggy Champ (2009 Rough Rider) with MCI Racing reproduction decals of the ‘79 originals, and a ball differential. A proper old-school simple build which I’ve never done from New In Box before, I’m waiting for the weather to be consistently a bit drier then this is going to hit the gravel!

Nice work, the Buggy Champ looks great!

I built a Sand Scorcher but tried and failed to get the box colour scheme perfect before giving up and painting it in the Herbie colours. I’m waiting on a Buggy Champ kit being delivered as I think I prefer the look. Having built the SS, it’s a proper old school Tamiy kit and I can’t wait to start. The Sand Scorcher and Rough Rider and not kits I owned as a child but I vividly remember them from the catalogue.

My first Tamiya car was the Sand Scorcher. I drove it to death, and most weekends were spent pulling it apart and rebuilding it (getting sand out of the oilite wheel bearings!) or changing bent parts. I went through a few body shells. Once when I couldn't get a Sand Scorcher shell I bought the rough rider one, it just had different height front post to mount the body. Eventually I got the correct wheels as well which just got mixed and matched as required.

Looking back I'm surprised it survived at all, regularly going through salt water and sand down the beach!

Has anyone got the new(ish) BBX? Its the first new chassis design for years and years, I'm quite tempted.
More pics and spec here:

Seems there is already a large amount of aftermarket mods and upgrades available

Looks expensive for what it is IMHO

I have one.

It’s a good build and a far better performer than the earlier stuff.

It’s not cheap but I think it’s worth the cost.

I agree it’s not cheap, but is it 80-100 quid better than what is now 30+ year old models such as a Hotshot 2, which I’d prefer looks wise.
I just fancy something I can mess about with off road.
I had a TRX4 which was excellent, but don’t fancy spending that much again

It looks interesting, but I’d buy a re-re Kyosho over the BB01 I think. The Kyoshos are just lovely quality and great to build. You’re also into nice quality Arrma 3s basher money which are a lot more robust and fun to actually hoon around, but not as nice to admire on the shelf.

I’ve never had shelf queens, all of mine are bought to use!
I’ve not looked at Kyosho for years, the last, and only one I’ve ever owned was the RS500 Cosworth around 1992. I wish I still had that!

For me a Kyosho Tomahawk or Turbo Scorpion would top the list of 2wd buggies.

My Egress kit arrived today!

I bought it from Tamico.de with my Halifax Clarity card (really good rate for purchasing in a foreign currency), and with the delivery charge it came to £302. I assumed I would have to pay vat and a courier admin fee but it would still be cheaper than the £509 UK price. I’ve just come back to find the kit left with my neighbour with no duty to pay so it must have slipped through the net? I have a Buggy Champ coming as well so it will be interesting to see what happens there.

I love my Egress. I bought two bodies and 2 sets of wheels and tyres so I have one for running and the other to look all shelf queen like. Same with my BBX.

It’s a dilemma…I really want to do a nice job of the body and sit it on a shelf, but it seems a shame not to run it! I think I might use the Buggy Champ instead.

I wish Tamiya would hurry up and do a release of the Falcon as that was my first and most sentimental car. There was some chat a couple of years ago amongst the Tamiya bloggers/YT that it was imminent but sadly it came to nothing.

The Hotshot is my most sentimental Tamiya.
My mate had one when it first came out, I begged for one but wasn’t allowed one. It was many years before I got my first Tamiya, and that was a Grasshopper 2.
I’ve since owned loads over the years, including the Hotshot rere soon as it was released.
I’m so tempted by the Blockhead Hotshot 2, but also the Supershot. Decision’s…

My best friend at primary school had wealthy parents so he had all the best and latest toys, with a games room stuffed full of every conceivable Star Wars toy. He got a Hotshot and I remember being in awe of it, before it was supplanted by a Kyosho Scorpion. I also had to wait quite a bit longer for my Tamiya Falcon, and even then I only got the kit and had to wait for the radio.

There was an RC car club at school, everyone was bringing in their Hotshots, Boomerangs, Bigwigs, and every other highly sought after Tamiya. All I could do was watch full of envy!
The closest I got to a Tamiya back then was the yearly catalogues that I read the print off, and standing upstairs in Kettering and Peterborough Beatties staring in awe at the Tamiyas on display behind the counter

I have to admit it was my least favourite. I started off with the Sand Scorcher/Rough Rider, then went to Fast Attack Vehicle, then Hot Shot when it came out.
The FAV was light weight and fun with a tuned motor, but to me the hotshot was just plasticy and not quite as much fun. Yes it was fast and 4WD, but it didn't look like a proper car. From memory it was given away after a couple of years to a friend who wanted to try one.
