I used TS-10 French Blue on mine, seems a good match.

What’s the best option for a complete newbie to all this to start with? I guess ideally something that can handle getting wet as it never stops frigging raining around here!
I'd suggest either the Midnight Pumpkin or Vanessa's Lunchbox.

They're both easy to build, pretty basic but very robust and a huge amount of fun. There are plenty of modifications you can do if you feel the need to tinker (I've spent more than I care to think about on my Lunchbox).

The monster trucks also have a much easier time running around on grass or sandy beaches. Only one gearbox and it's sealed and slightly further out of the puddles than the buggies.

The handling is at best comical, and even oil damped shocks, strut braces and other geejaws will never make it into a precision machine, but above all it'll be fun.

Some of the other monster trucks like the Monster Beetle or Blackfoot have fairly fragile rear diffs that need an alu modification to stop them bursting apart and chewing up gears regularly. The Aqroshot is another good choice for a first build if you prefer the look of a stadium truck.

If it has to be an on-road car, than anything on the TT-02 chassis is a safe bet. Again there are an almost infinite amount of hop-up parts and bodyshells to fit to them and general tinkering.

Have fun whatever you do. The Tamiya Club forum do postal racing once a month; someone proposes a track made out of a few markers and you've a month so see how many laps you can do in five minutes. My Terra Scorcher obviously outperforms the Lunchbox by a huge margin, but the truck is more fun to lap with.

I've got a Castrol liveried GT-4 Celica to make next on a TT-02S chassis, which is like the standard TT-02 but with a lot of the (Tamiya own brand) hop ups already added giving a lot of possible adjustment like camber and toe in for racing.

I only just spotted this thread!

I purchased a couple of models recently.

When I was a kid I had a traxxas rad 2. A few of us in the street had cars, we used to blast around the streets a lot and had a race at hillingdon raceway for my 13th birthday party. I really enjoyed this time and learning about the cars.

A couple of my mates had a tamiya cossie and a kyosho lazer sport. I bought the lazer for 30 quid when I was maybe 14 or 15 and recently I see there is a Retro (maybe a different word used) scene which is really cool.

I've been unwell for some time so recently I picked up that cossie tt02 I always wanted and it's just great. At some point I'd like to have a go at racing and maybe pick up a petrol inferno. My friends older brother had an inferno back then and I still have the want.

It's great being able to go back to all this.

I used to go to Harrow model shop and also Phil Greeno models in Rayners Lane. He used to tell us he was world rc champion having won it in Monaco. I never really believed him but when I looked on Wikipedia (I would have been in his shop probably early 90s) turns out it is true! Brilliant stuff and great memories.

I will dig the old cars out and repair them at some point. Look forward to nosing through this thread. Cheers all.

Phil Greeno Models, now that's a name I've not heard in a long time! I loved going in there to nose around at stuff I could never afford (I seem to remember it had a certain smell about it).

My Hotshot 2 Blockhead edition just turned up from Tamico, it is the one including ESC, and I also ordered a set of white wheels with it.
Even including the p&p, I saved £110 over ordering the same from Modelsport. Customs hadn't even opened it!

Whilst I mull over whether or not to build the Egress or the Buggy Champ, Tamico had the Wild One Blockhead on offer last week so I decided to buy it with the intention to build and run it. I needed to get the value of the order up to 165 euros so also went for the Tamiya BZ Super Stock motor for the Egress.

Wild One looks great and sounds like great value too!

Rarely check Tamico - will keep an eye out in the future!

I appreciate this is the Tamiya thread but I’ve long hankered after a Team Associated RC10; back in the day I bought a second hand RC10 and it was a massive jump from what I had owned/run before. They re-released them quite a few years ago but those kits fetch ridiculous money on eBay.

More recently they released an RC10 “clear edition”, which bizarrely was really for display only, and then yesterday they announced pre-orders for the proper RC10. It’s not cheap (£320) but for me it will be worth it to relive my childhood. I have friends in Florida so I’ve used their address as it’s US and Canada only for delivery.

Tamico in Germany are taking pre-orders too, and you can register your interest on Modelsport uk.

I should have checked that first before jumping in, although it will be quite a bit cheaper from the US provided I get past customs!

I've just ordered a Hotshot 2 Blockhead edition from Tamico, fingers crossed it gets through but is above duty threshold.
The Hotshot has always been my favourite buggy, but always thought it looked a little odd with the squashed cockpit.
One of the BH edition changes is a higher roof, and I think it looks much better!
I quite fancy ending up with a hybrid of Hotshot 2 with original Hotshot red and matching decals.
The next challenge will be finding some red CVA shocks to replace the BH yellow ones and other yellow parts, might have to get some red alloy ones instead. Also, the BH edition body comes prepainted, so that could be an issue too.

Edit: just realised I typed a lot of this last week!

This post has cost me £130. My Hotshot 2 Blockhead is due to be delivered today.

My HS2 got through customs with no charges, my order this week for the bits and bobs I need to build it to my custom spec weren’t so lucky, just paid the duty today on it.
Finally the red shocks and other bits are available separately so I don’t need to buy a full kit.
I just need some bearings and I can start building.
I wish I knew how Tamiya cut out the bodies so perfectly, my thinking is a machine of some sort. It’s the bit I dread most!

Mine has just arrived, made it through customs, just need to ensure that internal stock supervisor doesn't twig what it is...

Pawn.

I remember from experience that the clodbuster trounced all other Tamiya kit and I've been eyeing them up for a while, however deep down it was always the RC10 that I needed. The RC equivalent of a Skyway TA. I may have to pre order...

I think there are going to be a lot of disappointed UK/EU prospective customers if TA are prioritising the US/Canada markets…

Nearly ready to start, just waiting on bearings now.
A Blockhead edition built as a tribute to the original Hotshot (my all time favourite).
Custom MCI decals to give it a little more custom touch too. The body took some finding, it’s a genuine non painted Blockhead one, I had to order it for
Japan.

I have one of these on order and genuinely can't wait to receive it.

Takes various Tamiya parts, add a glut of 3d printed parts, in bespoke packaging.
Since reserving one, you get a weekly update video and its amazing at the amount of time the guy has put into developing, prototyping parts, printing etc.
All screws and fixings come in a 3d printed box that becomes a display stand, shocked at the thought and detail that gone into it. One guy ha done all the box design, all the printing, a real passion project for him.

Kudos to the guy for doing so, i'm genuinely excited to be getting delivery
