Anyone into old Tamiya's?
Discussion
Just came across this thread, so sorry to but in.
The name Tamiya rings a distant bell. When I was young I always wanted a Tamiya Tiger Tank with all the interior detail It was always just out of reach of my pocket money.
Cant remember the scale but it was huge, think it was R/C too.
Anyone know if they still make it? Would be ironic that when I can afford it, its discontinued.
Well fingers crossed.
And again, sorry to drop a dirty great tank in amoungst your cars.

Wow, what memories! I used to pour over the catalogues and buy RCMC every month. I started out with a Tamiya Striker which didn't go round corners very well. Then I upgraded to a Vanquish which I started to race with. However, it was very fragile so I moved onto a Schumacher Bosscat which was the nuts. I bought a FWD Alfa 156 Selenia a few years ago which I've still got. Vey very wheelspinny!

That looks the part, but I remember lots of interior detail rather than electric motors. Get to my age and it the memory becoms a little selective !Im sure its out there somewhere, thanks for your link, it does bring back memories.
Growing up is funny, I walked to school so many times trying to save up, I was so determined.
Cheers for fishing that out for me.
ps maybe Christmas.

Wow !
Never been in this part of the PH forum before, but I'm very glad I dropped in now.
I've always wanted a Tamiya RC car - I remember spending hours and hours pouring over the glossy catalogues back in the early 90s.
'The Blackfoot' was the object of my desire back then but alas, Dad decided that they were too expensive and being thirteen years old with no income of my own, it never happened
Anyone know if there are plans for a 'Blackfoot' re-release ? If not it's going to have to be 'the Hornet'...
Same, wow! I had a vague memory Id seen this forum before, cant believe its been here under my nose all along. It really does bring back the memories... mainly memories of me being 9/10 and like you, also unable to raise the funds to buy one. Brilliant thread!Never been in this part of the PH forum before, but I'm very glad I dropped in now.

Roop, just found the link to your site mate, you must have 30 cars!! Are you taking meds for that habbit?

I have to admit that the more I think about it, the more confused I am with Tamiya as to why they have released all these old models again.
Im sure its to rope in people like me, who never had one but always wanted one. I mean, if you didnt own a frog/hornet/whatever... then of course it would be at the very very top of your "Must Have!" list. Afterall, what in the world would a young wipper snapper want more than his own RC car.
Hope to start the build next week but I've been through the manual several times already, just a quick question:
How much grease did you use when building the gearbox? I'm a touch paranoid about not using enough and watching it explode in to fragments on it's first run or using too much and gumming everything up!
I'll also look out for getting the rear tyres on successfully...
And thanks to Roop for the earlier pointers !

UKBob, I haven't been back here for a while as I had some suspension things to take care of on the full scale car. However, now that is out of the way, I have picked up a re-release Hornet from Modelsport (much like yourself as I've just seen in the other thread !)

Well, congrats on your purchase. From what I remember, the Hornet was a great car, and there seem to be a fair few nostalgic trippers like myself who never got to drive them the first time round. I didnt flip through in advance like you, I just read the manual as I went along, and having never built a car before, Im pleased to say I didnt make any mistakes. So Im sure you'll be fine, and when it comes to the grease, they give you just enough. I probably only used 75% of my grease, Kinda wasnt sure how much I had or how much Id need, so I spent a fair bit of time spinning cogs in my hands, making sure to put the tiniest dab evenly on every single part that wanted it.
I doubt you could gum it up. Grease is grease, its all good, as its not gum. Make sure you ballrace the car, use your jedi senses to guestimate how much grease is just enough, and you'll still probably end up with a bit left over.
I found out electric cars now reach speeds of 55mph. I know nothing of gear boxes and how to make em explode, but Im sure youll be fine. Just enjoy the build and dont miss any of the small greasing icons. I dont know what other cars are like to build, but the hornet was fun. So much so, Id like to buy another.
As for the tyres, do let me know how you get on. I had a near death experience putting mine on. I just feel lucky enough to be alive right now, to tell the tale
Wow - this is bringing back some memories.
I never had a 'proper' Tamiya - I had to make do with a Grasshopper QD, still lots of fun though.
Two of my mates had a Hornet and a Midnight Pumpkin (any RC car that needs a wheelie bar is still special in my book), and I was so jealous. I remember spening hours in Beatties in Brighton drooling over the cars.
Maybe it's tiome to make amends

I've got a Falcon that I've aquired though my ex. It's in good order as far as I know the only problem being it's got a blown resistor on the speed controller. I can get some pics up but if anyone fancies taking it off my hands I'm open to offers

Ooh..I had to go to the model shop and buy some more ceramic grease when I built mine! I used it all when I built the gearbox up but then there are loads of other grease points to do Oh well, I have lots now for servicing and stuff
hehHow long did the decals take? I might have time to get started tonight.
decals take ages, took me about 5 hours or so, you MUST cut them right on the edge and when you fit them you may need to trim them with a razor, I did with the silver window ones, the stripes are a pain, best damp them with some water with a drop of washing up liquid incase you don't get them lined up spot on. take your time coz they will make or ruin the car.
Good luck and lets see some pics
Good luck and lets see some pics

I havent looked at them properly yet. Maybe this weekend.
The good old days . have to admit i miss them.
I just brought a frog off ebay, i love the old tamiya cars, yes they dont corner, but thats the fun ..having to drive them, i find modern cars today handle so well you loose some of the fun.
I started with a hornet, had a monster beetle, boomerang, mardav metor and mini stock, top cat then a boss cat , traxxas t-maxx , traxxas rustler, tamiya tl-01 lancia
but now i have gone back to the old stuff again .. brought a tamiya lunchbox, got a frog again.
I am thinking of getting rid of the lunch box .. has lot of spares . anyone interesting in the staffordshire area give me a ping will be pick up only.

Centurion looks the better kit, IMHO. The 1/16 RC Tiger is ace, though!
Non RC 1/16 Tiger somewhat cheaper than the RC version:-
